Saw a mint 29-3 for sale locally today . It had a target trigger and hammer but the grips were the standard factory wood grips . Not sure what the proper name for them is . Magna ? Service ?
Anyway did some of these N frames get shipped without the target grips ?
Unfortunately no box .
Thanks in advance.

I personally have not seen a 29-3 with Magnas.

Thanks for the reply. The gun is beautiful with a 6” barrel but I’m just wondering about the grips . Price is $900.00 .
Same owner has a model 13 and a model 25-2 . All mint but no boxes .

Owner probably took the Target grips off, sold them, and replaced them with Magna grips, either to make some $$ or because the Target grips were too large for small hands.

3 of my 29-3s that shipped in Feb, Apr, and Sept of 1983, have the targets with the extractor relief. Info I’ve seen, said the speed loader cutout for N frames came in 1983 and the 29-3s started in 1982. I’m sure Smith used up every set of the extractor relief grips.

RT44nut is correct, S&W would not have wasted a bunch of football stocks when the speed loader stocks were introduced. Early production examples of the 29-3 most likely would have shipped with football stocks until S&W exhausted the supply of football stocks.
