Thanks for the information about the number of 4 inch Pre-Model 29 with 4 inch barrels. I took possession of the pistol today. It is a four screw frame. It has very nice coke bottle grips, and about 95% finish. I will send for letter tomorrow.

I have two questions. The serial number is S180240. What is the approximate year of manufacture? The cylinder is serial numbered to the gun, but missing the letter S in front of the serial number. Was this the usual practice for the Pre-Model 29's?

Sometimes the "S" is somewhat separated from the rest of the serial number on the cylinder. Take a look at the chambers in front of the one with the serial number.

I've had some without the S. Just an oversight by the factory.
They're weren't and aren't perfect ya know. :)

Your revolver is correct. S&W closed down the Soft Fitting Department in May 1957 and no longer numbered the barrel and cylinder with the serial number of the gun. If the gun had to be "reworked" during manufacturing, selected parts were stamped with the serial number of the gun (without the S) so they would be kept with the original parts. In your case, the cylinder was numbered (quite a few cylinders are numbered like yours, but few barrels have numbers stamped in them).

Your 44 Magnum dates to 1958.
