I recently bought a M 659 from 1983. I was comparing it to my nickel model 59 from 1978.
I noticed the frames are different. The 659 is beefier above the trigger than the 59. Anyone know the reason for this? The 659 is already a very heavy and beefy pistol with its stainless steel frame vs the aluminum frame of the model 59. Curios as to why they thought this extra weight was necessary, or if there's some other reason?

The change in the slide stop area was changed throughout. Both the aluminum alloy and stainless got the design “upgrade.” Apparently there was or could be frame cracks in that area.

Disregard my 659 example as it’s a bit different. 1987 is too early for a transitional but it has the 3rd Gen sideplate.
