My Nephew the cop wants an AR. I tried to steer him toward the sport. He immediately responded with the old, no F/A no Dustcover No Way. So I quit offering advice and am just sitting back waiting for him to decide. Then I will offer him advice again. Yesterday evening he came by and was telling me that one of our local county sheriffs department has a .308 Remington 770 just like his (baseline model) but with a lot larger scope on it. He said that they have 3 officers qualified to shoot it at 1000 yards (what?) and would I help him learn to shoot his at 800 yards. He doesnt understand plugging a firing solution into a rifle scope. He has no clue about how everything can determine how a bullet flies. And presently he cant shoot 1 MOA at 100 yards. I didnt laugh (oh I wanted to) but I told him I would teach him to shoot his rifle accurately at 100 then 200 yards and if he can do that then we will work on longer distances..Can I ask for advice on a better way to deal with this. I dont always respond intelligently as many of you have noticed. LOL

You are a 100% wright on what you have told this young man. Sounds like he needs a lot of range time! A LOT range time will do him good.

Sounds like he doesn't know what he doesn't know.

IMO, just sit back and chuckle while he figures things out the hard way. It's the only way some people learn.

If after fumbling around with other people from the shallow end of the gene pool he realizes he needs your help, he'll be more receptive to your advice.

I think you are approaching it the right way. I'd be like you and wonder if the guy was going to stick in there long enough to be worth my time. I do wonder though if you set him up at say 500 yds to watch him strike out, if it might enough of a shot to his ego to get him slow down and listen? Just a thought.

If he wants an AR, what's he looking at a Remington 770 for?

He has the 770 and wants to "shoot a thousand yards". he wants an AR for the "cool" factor.
This same nephew (i question the genetics on the other side of his family) Bought a 96 ram 1500, with a manual tranny, had never had a manual tranny. They put two clutches and a tranny in it. He was going to give it to a salvage yard and I told him that I would take it. I put O2 sensors, tie rod ends and tires. It has a new crate motor in it and needs a paint job and has a really weird rear end gearing makes it drive like a car. He says it is junk. I get over 25mpg out of it. He bought a new mustang..in 3 months the dealership has already put a clutch in it. He says they told him it wasnt anything he did. We have offered to teach him to drive a clutch. He says he doesnt need the help so we dropped the subject before he gets too angry. Just a little back story on the questionable genetics!!

Agree with this. Sometimes a bit of humility can go a long way.

This! But, I would recommend snickering too.;)

In all honesty, hand him a Ruger 10/22 with iron sights and teach him to cut one ragged hole at 25 yards. Then move him out to 50 yards. Explain to him he can learn repeatability (Which is a MUST for good groups). Once he gets it in the 22, he will get it at longer distances (300 yards ish) After 400, the vision, scope, wind and drop really come into play.

FWIW, I would explain to him the way we learned in the military.. Step 1: Crawl....Step 2: Walk.....Step 3: Run....Step 4: Train often. If he says he knows steps 1 & 2. You simply tell him its not a bad idea to review them again. Hope this helps you my friend.
