What is the exact rail length of the MagPul Angled Fore Grip? How many picatinny "blocks" does it span?

I'm curious to measure out and see if I can fit a vert grip, AFG, and my Harris bipod all on the lower rail.

Thanks!

Wow, the 2nd generation seeems to be a better overall design. I like the fact they took the width of the grip into consideration as well. My wife didnt like the first gen ones, now she may find this more fitting to her smaller hands. Thanks for that link.

Looks like a lot better design. The mount doesn't ride so high up into the quad rail. I cut off the internal locking tabs so I could easy install on my Bushmaster and Sig quad rails.

I prefer the first-gen design. I like how the hand grip wraps up to the side rails, making it more comfortable for my fingers to grip on the low profile rail grips.
My only complaint is the locking pin fits loose in the rail slot, so the afg has a bit of fore/aft play. Has anyone wrapped the pin/screw with anything to make it a bit thicker?

See I just decked out my entire compliant version in Magpul, and just recently "finished", and I read last week about the newer MBUS and now the new AFG... But it's cool, I am still happy with mine as they are brand new and still "work"... Would have been nice to have the newer ones but hey, it's cool.

One thing I notice here, off topic, is a lot of people on this forum seem to use and buy the "upgraded" Magpul stuff, whereas it was made clear to me by several different sources that a .22LR rifle, even as cool and highspeed as the 15-22 is, won't really benefit from things like the upgraded Magpul stocks and grips, the standard MOE (and least expensive) options are not only just fine , they're really all that's needed. I have done my Compliant version with a MOE pistol grip, MOE Stock (and did it myself and pinned) , MBUS, XTM Rail covers , and AFG. Curious to see feedback from people that have one of the more expensive grips/foregrips/stocks if they really benefit. Please don't take me wrong, I'm not knocking it, just wondering.

ALSO,

I have considered putting a regular vertical grip ahead of the AFG so I had both options. Would that be completely pointless/useless/tasteless or a cool and good look/idea?

I think more purchases are based on tacticool rather than functional diminishing returns.

I use both the AFG and a grippod on mine and find it useful. Don't really use the vertical grip much but appreciate the grippod feature when shooting at longer ranges for accuracy.

The GenII MBUS have been "coming soon" since 2008 I think. The only thing the second gen do different is have a slightly smaller profile.

The only upgrades from what you got are the stocks and the pistol grip. The CTR gives you a friction lock which wouldn't be critical on a .22, and an added QD swivel spot, which may be worth the cost if someone is already using sling set up to use it. The ACR is a LOT more comfortable with the wide comb and gives storage. Again, not needed for a .22 going to the range, but people using it to hunt or doing long range shooting may appreciate it a lot more. The MIAD grip over the MOE gives more options for hand sizes. Trigger reach goes a long way for giving your trigger finger proper position to squeeze straight back, and some people will pay more for a more adaptable grip.

The AFG is supposed to replace the VFG. Why do you feel you want another grip? If you'd use both then it doesn't matter if it's ugly or not (even though it would probably be thought of as useless/redundant/ugly).

Pay no attention to such experts. The 1522 is about what you want, not what others say is needed. Someone once posted that putting a $90 CTR stock on a 1522 was nuts. I said I agreed, mine only cost $85. ;)

thank goodness i like the m4 look of the stock- stock better. thats 25% the cost of the rifle ;). Buy what you want, not what you need. 'need' is pretty subjective too, unless you're LEO/military.

does anyone have a picture of the AFG1 and AFG2 laying next to eachother?

Does anyone else's AFG have a bit of fore/aft play? It seems the pin/screw is a bit smaller than the gap between the rails on the 1522. Has anyone tried to make it a bit thicker?

I have the same play in mine. It annoys me every time. Id be interested to see what others have done to solve the problem as well.

Thanks everyone for the replies, Learn something new every day!

and with the 15-22 I really don't think there's a problem going for a tacticool look. I mean hell, I know mine is not a duty rifle or a combat carbine etc. And I am no Navy SEAL or Army Ranger. But what the hell, right? I mean c'mon, it's a grown up way of playing GI Joe. We're all going to the range to shoot something, I just want mine to look badass while I'm doing it, no big deal IMHO. And the 15-22 is uniquely suited in both capability firing and modifying, its both badass and capable of LOOKING badass.

I agree. The endless customization of the 15-22 is half the fun. The other half is gettin to shoot stuff! A 40mm grenade has no practical urban civilian use, but how many of us here would be launching those if they were legal? I mean, its not called tacti-stupid right?

Just checked mine... ever so slight fore/aft play.
I cranked the screw down another 1/4 turn and now it's tight as a duck's butt.... no play at all.

Don't know if anyone answered the original question but yes both a Harris and AFG will fit. See the top of the pic

Thanks man! Fixed!

I didnt use a correct sized flathead the first time, so I was scared I would damage the screw head if I tightened more. The right tool does the job!

You might want to try some aluminum tape (you can get it at Home Depot). I used that tape to tighten up the factory buttstock, and I see no reason it shouldn't work in this application as well.
