Looking to pick something up to shoot at the range and use as a back up HD/SD pistol. Narrowed down to a couple of choices.

M&P9 2.0 Compact or the Canik TP9 SF Elite. Anyone have experiences with both?

Politics aside I too looked at the Canik TP9FS and was amazed at the package they offered out of the box, ended up with the CZ P10 due to the rave trigger reviews. The M&P was also in the running but didn't make the cut which was a hard call for me but sometimes you just have to veer off the usual course.

I own a Canik TP9SFv2. They are fairly cheap and the box has absolutely everything you need in it- holster, cleaning brush, speed loaded its all in there along with an extra mag. Talk about a dependable gun! Thousands of rounds through mine and nary a problem. I call it a a Glock killer. 18 rounds plus one in the chamber, cheap and dependable, I would stake my life on the gun if I had to. Under $400 and sometimes you can find them for under $350. What is not to like. Canik, in Turkey they are a major military manufacturer they make everything up to and including missiles. They have the high rating for firearm manufacturing its called an AS9100 certification and a nato AQAP-2120. If you got to have a plastic gun then this is what I recommend.. Good luck

I agree with BamBam.

Get a CZ or a Browning HP. Awesomeness at the range, plus a good home-defense handgun.

If it's going to be mainly a range toy, why bother with anything but full size? The size difference isn't much, the full size has advantages.
Does the full size really have advantages?

The M&P 2.0 Compact is the perfect size for someone who's looking for one gun. It's large enough to be easy to manipulate and have a decent sized sight radius. Still, it's small enough that if someone wanted to carry it, they could. How many of us started at the range and then decided to start carrying later? I'm going out on a limb and say all of us.

So, I think the OP is starting with the right choice. They did say range use and as a back up HD/SD tool.

My only thought on the range use side is what distance the range is that the OP normally uses. I have a Shield and a full size MP, and when at my usual indoor range (only 10 yds) any difference is negligible for me for accuracy between the 2. Same when i had a compact 1.0.
But in summer months when i am either at a local outdoor range (up to 25 yds) or on family land; well the full size makes a difference when I’m shooting longer distances.

So for range fun I’d consider distances i intended to shoot at. Just my .02 of course.

OP here: range is 25 yards, though I normally shoot at self defense ranges 5 - 10 yards.

Also, this is not my only pistol. I have others for EDC, nightstand home defense, bag gun, etc... This pistol will mainly be for range and likely be a downstairs HD pistol in arms reach of my recliner. And as a back up carry gun, though, I have smaller pistols for carry.

A Canik with a 5.2 inch barrel and a 20 round mag is cool, but a little big for where it will be sitting at home and way too big for carry. That's why I narrowed it down to the SF Elite which is closer in size to the 2.0 Compact.

To OP: sounds like you have (more than?) enough pistols already. And this really sounds like a range TOY (and a backup -- which I interpret as an excuse to get another gun... absolutely necessary). Then go for the non--usual-suspect Canik. Why not! It is fun.

Coincidentally, after I finished shooting my PC MP9 today at the range, a gentleman approached me and offered me to try his Walther Creed and Canik. I never handled either and was glad with the chance. Let me just say I was VERY impressed by the Canik. It changed my (unjustified) prejudice toward the Turkish firearm. (The Walther is fine too. It is just that I knew what it could offer beforehand.)

My vote is for the Canik. A unique pistol with the whole package and EXCELLENT trigger. (And it is cheap.)
