Range report: 627 Performance Center

Update

Here's an update on this sweet baby: I've shot this fine revolver regularly in the six months since I fired the first round from it. My love for this revolver is unabated. The action, balance, sights, engineering, fit, finish, and everything else are top notch. Lock-up and timing are spot on. It handles everything I feed it with ease. It's extraordinarily accurate and very pleasant to shoot, even with barn-burners. Great gun.

Mines about the same but longer.....

I know this has been about the snub version, but heres my eight shooter;

I've always liked the balance of a 5 inch barrel, and especially like the modern contours to this barrel.

Also like the ease of frt sight replacement. The gold bead is a nice field sight, but for a range session calling for a std patridge or ramp...easy to change the bead out.

Additionally the new 627's are probably about the strongest 27's EVER produced.

You guys are really tempting me, bumping this thread to the top again. A local dealer has one the these and I'm trying to decide on selling a couple others to fund buying this one. I have an older style, original barrel profile 627 that's a favorite of mine to shoot.

The original post actually nudged me into action on a long-standing desire for one of these revolvers, and I ordered one from my LGS in late May. Then I learned the company was out of stock and the PC was was turning its attention to back orders for other models.

After about three months my LGS happened to get one of these on consignment and in seemingly new condition. (Which makes one wonder: who would let one go?) I bought that one. Then two months later (a couple of weeks ago), my special order finally arrived. I now have two of these fine revolvers.

I can testify to the inherent accuracy. From .38 Special match loads up to punchy .357 commercial loads, the gun hit where it was pointed. I have always shot N-frames more accurately than Ks, Js or Is, but I usually needed a longer barrel to do it. This snubby .357 allows me to be as accurate as I am with longer 6-1/2" and 8-3/8" barrels on my prewar/postwar ODs and a Model 57.

I know they all look the same, but here's one of mine keeping company with a crucial component of my morning ritual:

I'm honored, good sir. And as you now know, it is one heck of a fine revolver.

Love mine... my rant!

I have the 5" version and I put 250+ rounds through it again yesterday at both 25 and 50 yards.

The only negative with this gun is cleaning it afterwards (I'm a bit anal about making mine look shop new each time you see as it is sooooo pretty - but that is really my own OCD problem and not the pistols fault).

But the accuracy of this revolver is quite astonishing now that mine is fully broken in and I have learned to shoot it properly. I am getting tiny groups at 25 and very respectable groups at 50. Could be why Jerry Miculek likes this pistol too?

I just love this pistol! The trigger feel is the best of any gun that I own (which contributes to its accuracy).

And because it is a revolver IT NEVER FAILS to go bang - NOT EVER!

So this is my #1 home defense choice by far! (Just make sure that you have ear protection - even if you somehow miss the bad guy he will certainly be both deaf and terrified afterwards).

Model 627 photo for size comparisons...

I'm very interested in having a new Model 627 PC be my next gun purchase. I've yet been able to find one locally, so that I can hold it in my hand. Without seeing one in person, I'm having a hard time getting a good perspective on the size of it. Does anyone happen to have any pictures of their 627 revolver either in hand or maybe even showing it's size compared to other guns or items (like compared to a full size 1911 for example)? The picture in this thread showing it next to a coffee cup and spoon was kind of like this. I know I'll love the revolver, I'm just wondering about how feasible it would be for any form of concealed carry. I currently have a little Glock 27 for concealed carry, and while I'm not expecting it to be anywhere near that size, I know that if I have one, I'll want to carry it some of the time, even if it's only on cold Michigan winters (when I wear big, heavy coats).

Great write up and great follow ups to the OP.

Does anyone have a photo of the 'detent' or lock mechanism that holds the cylinder shut?

Awww, OK, got now.
Thanks 'chad, it was bothering me that I couldn't picture how this worked.

It's my favorite in my (small) collection too. I am shocked at the accuracy as well. Maybe it's the weight helping I don't know, but it gives me confidence in addition to it's "Performance"!

Since mine is also the recent (627-5) iteration, I bought a "plug" but haven't installed it. I mostly bought it just to have "in case".

One thing you might note, in other threads on this forum, is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason, but there are two different front sights being used from the factory. Look at Stainz and .357magger's photo's for the other style.

Photography is my other hobby, so here is a fun "staged" pic with a 5 Star Speedloaders bedside block. I put .38 spl target ammo in the speed loaders and realize now I should have put something more eye catching like Hornady .357 "Critical Defense" since those have a red tip, copper bullet, and silver case. Might have made a nice "pop" to this pic. :p Next time!
