Is there any big advantage of a round butt over a square butt for CCW?

I found that a round butt conceals better because it tucks in, smoothing the curve of the grip.

I also prefer round butt because it brings my trigger finger closer.

Absolutely! Concealability is greatly enhanced...one of the reasons I usually carry my 642 or 60 instead of my H&K P7-M8 whilst not wearing a suit, sportcoat, or other outer garment.

Be safe.

The reason I ask, is that all I've carried is a round butt. And I do like it. I've seen some square butt snubbies for a decent price, and just wondered if they were much different than a RB for concealability.

I regularly carry two revolvers, a 2" 36 and a 3" 65, both have round butts. I carry the 36 in a pocket holster and the 65 IWB. I think that the round butt makes for better concealment and more comfort. I don't have a holster for a square butt gun that I could use to compare.

Years ago, I had a SB Model 36. For holster carry, it was no different than a RB. Today, I carry a RB Model 637. For pocket or ankle holster, it's the only way to go. When carrying a K-frame or larger, I don't think it makes any difference. With the larger frame, you'll need some kind of holster, and with the right type of holster/position of carry, the SB can conceal as easily as a RB. Luckily, there are enough grip manufacturers out there that can make a RB grip as large as a SB, and a SB as concealable as a RB.

I don't think that there is a huge difference, esp if one places musical grips until they find one to their liking. I had a nickel 36 with a RB and a blued one with a SB, both two inch. Either would still work in the pocket, though I admittedly put stag grips on them and didn't use the factory stocks or oversize rubber grips.

Now what you can do with a SQ butt, is to put decent sized service style grips on it and use it for a light kit/field gun. The feel can also be more familiar if you're used to using a square butt K. I think the latter might be part of their popularity in days past.

It is a bit harder to find stocks to fit a SQ butt than a RB, but they're out there.

Where do you carry, Misty? For pocket carry the difference might matter at times. For belt carry I don't think it matters a bit. My 5" N frame is a square butt and the cylinder is what's hard to hide.

Depends on where you carry it. Mostly it doesn't matter for concealment, but makes a big difference in fitting the hand. For MY hand, the answer is clearly SB in J, RB in K or larger.

I carry a SB mdl 36 I use an IWB cant adjustable holster and just give a little more fwd cant and it can't be seen.

I seem to remember that a couple of the aftermarket grip makers once offered round to square conversion grips for the Chiefs Special. I could be mistaken, but I also believe S&W produced Magna Stocks that were also J frame round to square conversion grips. If you can find a pair that aren't too expensive, like Jay Scott's (I sold a pair of the conversion grips about 3 months ago, sorry!) it would be very little invested to test your question on a practical level.

Personally, I prefer round butts on the J frame and K frames carried in concealment. Some folks seem to prefer the square butts because it provides them with a more comfortable grasp. I think you have to decide for yourself what is best for you. Best of luck to you!

Right now I usually carry in purse or fanny pack. No thumbs down or booing please. That's in another thread! But this fall I'll start carrying IWB. I'll stick with the rb. They fit my hand very well.

Thats were woman get off easy, a purse will hide anything. A guy with a purse would need a gun. For Fall and Winter a shoulder holster can be a good option that no one ever talks of.

Actually, boobs hide everything, because with the right shirt, the gun butt can tuck up where the shirt comes away from the body.

Heck, Barb, with the 'right' shirt, most women could strap a full size to the hip and most red blooded American males (or chauvinist pigs, depending on how you want to view them) would not notice the gun. Their wives, on the other hand.....................

Misty: I have worn concealed since 1970. While not female, I have carried S&Ws that long for a living and as a training officer.

Round butt conforms better to the human body. Also, round butt is easier on females due to the difference in pelvis and hip.

Check out IWB carry carefully and make sure it is comfortable mode of carry for you, due to reasons stated above.

Good luck and be safe.
