I really like older reloading tools. Tons of high quality machining, they tend to go well with my tastes.
So, I luck into a die set by RCBS specifically for 45 Auto Rim. If you guys load cast bullets for things like the 1917 or 1955 Target model, you probably get why this would be pretty cool.
It's an old die set from 1974. Back then, decapping was done with the expander die. It's a slick way to keep the decapping pin aligned with the primer flash hole.
Anyhow, there is a tiny decap pin retaining nut, which was missing from my die. The equivalent part in a new die wouldn't work. I thought about making one but decided I'd call RCBS customer service, with more curiosity than hope they would have the part. I was on hold for a bit, but managed to get through. The guy I talked to knew what part I was looking for. He said, "Those haven't been made in ages. I don't know if I got any, but I have a parts bin I can check." He's back on the line in a minute and says "Yeah, I got some! I'll send you two so you have a spare".
That was on Thursday. The parts were here on Monday!
Wow! That's amazing customer service! Rush delivery of a part for a die set that was discontinued about 40 years ago!
Last time I called RCBS it was to get a replacement pair of linkage pins for my RS2 press, which I bent during a misadventure into bullet swaging. That was in the 1980s.
It was a pleasure to find out RCBS customer service is just as fantastic as it was back in the "good ol' days"!
