Hello all, Looking to you more experienced than I am to give me your thoughts on a question that I have. Approximatly how much does it affect the value of a pre-war N frame by having the bluing redone? 50%? Less or more? Consider that the gun is in average condition. I am looking at a 38/44 hd built around 1939, 1940. Thanks for your help and insight. Ron

Doubtful it would have collector value, but would be more of a shooter. Having the work done by someone like Fords would affect the value less. If you compare a perfect original 38/44 to a reblue 38/44, it might cut the value in half, maybe more if it's not a particularly good job.

If the gun in question is already re-blued/worn, and someone did an average job, probably take 1/3 to 1/2 off the price of an original gun in similar condition.

If you are asking "should" this gun be re-blued, meaning it still has the original but worn finish, my vote would be to leave it alone unless it is pitted/rusty. As wiser Forum members have stated before me, you only have the original finish once. Hope this is helpful.

I had a gunsmith friend in Waldo, Florida, who before he retired from the business was an absolute Cracker Jack at bluing firearms. I had him reblue an M-94 Winchester that developed rust on the barrel as a result of being stored in my car trunk in a wool lined case, he redid a pre-64 M-70 Winchester that had had a rough life, and he miraculously removed the receiver social security number engraving from a 6.5 Mannlicher- Schoenhauer that I was able to buy cheap because of this ugly blemish. He also made several custom rifles for me, all with really nice bluing. But, one afternoon, and this was well before I knew about SCSW and this forum, I took him what I now know to be a pre-17 K-22 and a long action post-war K-38, both in good condition, except for the bluing. I asked him to reblue them, and he refused. He slicked up the trigger pulls on both, but he would not consider doing any reblue work on them. Think this over, was his response, and I'm glad today he gave me the opportunity to do this.

Thanks for the replies and thoughts. Think I will wait and watch for a more original piece even if it is a little rougher. Ron
