I am being offered a pre-war 38-44 with what looks to have a 6.5" barrel. Pistol has the older hammer with a serial number and milling grooves, and has been re-blued, quite nicely, and has stag grips. Could anybody here provide me with a price range which might be acceptable for a pistol like this? Apologies but I have no pics.

If it is a good re-blue job and the stag grips are nice, I would say between $500 and $600 for a pre-war Outdoorsman. In CA maybe more.

Is there any chance that this is a factory refinish? Check under the stocks for a rework mark such as this....

Read: "5.55" or May, 1955.

If the refinish was factory work it doesn't hurt nearly as much as if it was third party work.

This is a early, postwar, long action transitional that was factory refinished.

It is a factory rework and has other interesting history as well.

In a moment of weakness I paid $600 OTD.

The Re-blue is nicely done by a professional, but not factory. Rollmarks are good but ever so slightly softer than the crisp sharp outlines on original non refinished work. No pitting though, This thing looks pretty good, but seller is asking in the 1k range, and my thought was that 500 or 600 I would do it, but not at 1K +. Seller is trying to tell me that the "registered hammer" is proof of its high worth etc. etc.

Unless it was factory refinished, then even $300 would be too much for me. But, is that a Humpback Hammer? If so, and if it is still in good, unmolested condition, it is probably worth $250 alone.

A serial number would help us try and pin point it for you, but $1000 is too high.

Little voice

I'd listen to that little voice inside your head. (The one that made you post the question here).
You probably sense something is not right, and are not sure what it is. So I'd walk and wait for a confident purchase.
Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for the replies, I will try to get some pics of the piece next time I have the opportunity, and post them. At least now I have something to go by price wise. Lots to know and learn in this regard, and do not want to get taken to the cleaners on a "great" buy.
Oh, and that is a beauty Sebago son.
