I've been using ShipMyGun for the past couple of years as a legal but cheaper means to ship handguns to an FFL compared to shipping through an FFL on my end. I know that some of you have as well.

I recently learned that to ship to an FFL, it does not need to be listed as a "preferred dealer" on SMG's website zip code-based drop down menu. It only need to be listed.

SMG recommends that FFLs to be shipped to be listed as preferred dealers, but this is not required. SMG suggest that you coordinate directly with a listed-though-not-preferred dealer prior to shipping so as to avoid any potential issues. But, they will sell you a prepaid label to any FFL on their drop down list.

As there are many more SMG listed FFLs than there are listed "preferred FFLs" this makes it a lot easier to ship to your transferees preferred FFL.

Yes, best to check. I have two FFL's who accept with a govt ID. Many don't.

So does this get around the refusal of the major shippers to accept handguns for shipment from non-FFL individuals? If so, how?

I looked at it briefly and person shipping still has to include copy of DL. No mention of SMG supplying FFL. Many if not most FFLs I know won't receive a gun from non FFL.

UPS only. Not only will they accept shipments, you can send from the local UPS package store, no need to go to a Hub. I have done it twice without any issue.

I have an email from SMG customer service. It has all the instructions including the cell # of the senior account exec at UPS with instruction to call him while in the store if there is any problem.

BIG savings on shipping and the store is .8 miles away.

Thank you!

Thanks for the info. The time has come for me to start selling off my collection, and I had been wondering if SMG would be a better shipping option than using my local FFL . My local FFL was reasonable on price, but it might take his shipping department up 2 weeks to ship out the gun. I will have to give SMG a try.
