Found a very clean 1026 in a pawn shop yesterday (no box one mag ) and traded a 5906 and 3913 + a little $ for it. Ran 30 rounds through it at the range yesterday GREAT shooter and makes a nice companion for my 1066.

I’ll admit that I haven’t kept close watch on the 10xx market so the best I can do is throw out a number that seems reasonable. $1100-$1200 for high condition 1026 with no extras and one mag is the range I would guess.

If the 5906 and 3913 are also no box/one mag and the extra cash wasn’t a huge stack, then it sounds like a decent buy. You swapped two pistols made in extremely high volume for a scarce one.

Y’know, I don’t want to be a downer, but we dump heaps of praise on S&W constantly for the pistols in the 3rd Gen era. But I believe in my heart that S&W was straight-up stupid when they killed off the entire 10xx line in less than five years of production. And while we will never have pure answers, I will go forward believing that it was done simply to boost hype and sales on the pet .40 S&W round and pistols.

S&W’s killing of the 10xx pistols will always disgust me.

Agreed that it was short sighted of them to stop making them.

Now I have heard that production costs on the third gen pistols were very high. Something that you could justify if you could maybe sell a bazillion of them like the nine mills and the forties when they were all the rage. I do not think that the 10s were big sellers when they came out. Being why they are hard to come by today.

With that said my two 1006s and my 1066 are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Well I’m not suggesting that building the 10xx pistols was cheap, but they weren’t a massive departure from existing guns. It would seem to me that the large parts (frame and slide) were basically 4506 parts which were LONG in production. Barrels and extractors were 10xx specific but then pretty much all the fire control and associated parts are all 4506 parts also... no?

I have never been in the business of manufacturing. I admit up front that I have no experience in running a for-profit corporation. But S&W has made MANY more dogs that were totally forgettable. Hindsight being 20/20, it sure seems like the 10xx pistols were absolutely loved.

Agreed on S&W killing off the 10's. Would not have been that gungho on a 1006 but a very clean 1026 is another story seeing it is # 3 in the lowest production number S&W 10 semi auto. Number I have seen is 3200 were built from 1990 only and this one was one of that number without the mag safety. Have a BUNCH of 3rd gen Smiths so those 2 were disposable. Sounds like I did OK still below a new Kimber so--.

Being a 9mm and 45ACP guy, I would have kept the 5906 and 3913 as they are two of my favorites although I think that you got a good deal value wise.If I ever see an Model 1076 at the right price, I could be tempted.

I think it was a good deal also, 100-1200 seems to be the going price now.. There seems to be more of the LE version with out the mag disconnect. VSP issued the gun in the 90's and ordered them in that configuration. I have one consumer and two LE versions. None were marked VSP as far as I know..They also issued 1076's to non patrol personnel.

You are correct in that VSP issued both the 1026 and the 1076. I own a VSP 1076 and it lives in a VSP 1026's box ;)

From my understanding, troopers in the field were issued 1026s. Seems the 1076s were issued to higher ranking officers and detectives, in my mind I'm picturing plain clothes officers and supervisors.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As to the value of 1026s, real world I would throw out the 1000-1200 range, but IMO this number is inflated a bit. 3100 ever made isn't THAT rare especially compared to the 1086 and 1046. I've only ever seen 2 1086s for sale online and 2 1046s for sale online, and I bought one of the two 1086s I've come accross. There may have been 1600+ 1086s made but they sure don't pop up on the market like there were 1600 made. They are very scarce on the market.

Slightly off track but when I was a law enforcement deputy I carried an HK USP 45 as patrol deputy. When I was watch deputy my station gun was my HK P7M13 if I happened to be out of the station wearing the M13 I occasionally got comments on the unusual gun carried.

Have quite a few nice Smith 9s and have been a big 10mm fan for many years. Carried a 10 often when i worked a Pawn Shop on the late shift till midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Carried my 1066 with 180 grain Gold Dot Underwoods there as if some nut job hit us with a shotgun and a vest knew that I could hit him center mass easily from the counter and put him down with over 700ftLBS and knock the wind out of him at the least. A 45 would be an off caliber for me and would not have the energy to do this. I'm primarily 9/10mm and 40. Set up to load 10 mm and have a couple thousand rounds of once used brass on hand. Have some really nice .40 Smiths also in a 97 Shorty .40 a TSW 4013 and a Atlanta Police marked decock only pre rail TSW 4003 to name a few.

I'm not a collector, so never cared for the low production DAO guns. But I have owned multiple 1006s, 1026s and 1076s. All robust, reliable pistols that handle the "real" 10MM ammo without issue. Still have a 1026, purchased years ago LNIB. Dealer had a LNIB 1076 right beside it for the same price.

I've not kept up on prices, but think the trade you made was reasonable.

Enjoy your 1026. I still enjoy mine, and have no plans to trade it in on some tactical plastic wonder pistol anytime soon;)

Actually, the uniform troopers carried the 1076. I never saw a VSP 1026 and worked with a few BCI guys that still had 1076’s. Pretty much all of the guys I knew were glad to get rid of them.

I gave 1500 for mine and it came with a beat up 1066 for free... so I think I did ok... my 1026 is priceless to me. I put FBI palm swells on her and she says loaded with a FBI 11rd mag sometimes primary some times back up... she's my woods gun and rides in an elephant tried milt sparks rig.
