I'm cleaning and polishing the internals of a recently acquired .32 Regulation Police revolver shipped in 1922. I'd like to replace the rebound spring with a reduced weight spring. Can anyone more knowledgable than I tell me what an original spring weight would be? I have a supply of Wolf return springs in weights from 12 to 16 lbs. Any suggestions on what spring to use?

As an aside this revolver does not have the nub on the rebound slide and the hammer block used on newer revolvers.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I believe the current factory rebound spring would be 17-18 pounds. Not sure about whether your vintage gun would be the same, but it's probably in that ballpark.

You could try a current factory rebound spring, or another option would be the Wolff assortment pack, which would give you some lower rated springs to choose from. These packs include springs from 12-16 pounds.

Remember that lowering the rate of the rebound slide spring will also have an effect on the single action pull rate, bringing it lower. With this in mind, be sure to check the SA pull with a quality pull gauge after your spring modification to verify the SA is still safe. S&W recommends a single action pull minimum of 3 pounds.

Yes they were stiff. A couple years later S&W changed to an improved side plate hammer block safety design to do just want you want; improve the trigger pull. You can't do that and the lower spring rates suggested above will do it better anyway.

But be sure the side plate safety is well lubed and working freely as well.
