S&W Model 10-5 .38 spl 2" barrel. Serial number on the butt is 2D770XX. I watched this for a couple of weeks at a LGS and then, after selling some stuff a gun show I had the money to buy the model 10-5. What is the meaning of the"2" before the rest of the serial number?

Welcome to the addiction.

This site has all the info this side of a Standard Catalog of S&W. Scroll down about half way through the first post. You may also fine a timeline for your M-10 in the second post. 2D started 1977 ended 1978 but you will learn never say a firm date unless you have a factory letter and that will tell you the date it shipped from the factory.

ExRanger714 & bob42: Thank you, that was very helpful. 1977 is close enough for me. In January 1977 we moved across the state, bought a house, I started a new job and also started reloading .38 spl for my new Colt Diamond Back. Not a bad year all in all. (Sadly, I did not keep that Colt.)

400 and tax. I checked gunbroker prices and they all looked to be around 400-500. I guess some will say I paid too much but I wanted this one so I'm ok with it. Thanks.

S & W has had several different serial number formats for K frame fixed sight .38 Specials. The first million just had a number (with some adjustable sight guns included), the second million had a V prefix, the third a C prefix, and the fourth the D. After this they started with 1D and went to someplace in the 30D range before starting the current three letter/four digit format.

Enjoy your model 10!

Sir,
You bought what looks to be a fine example of a very fine firearm. In my books, also a very desireable one. I do not think you paid too much, given the prices that guns are bringing most places these days. I doubt seriously that you will regret this purchase. But if you do, you have a gun that a great many would love to have. Congratulations!

Range Report

21Ft. SA. Front site blade is black and I had trouble seeing it against the black target background. Plus I always seem to drift to the left and up no matter what I am shooting. I shot the rest of the 50 round box Remington 130 gr. FMJ DA at a brown silhouette behind the line moving around a bit. The shots were scattered much more but the silhouette did not survive. :)

Thanks for all your remarks. I have appreciated the input.

Sounds like a very good deal to me. Looks good and you shot it to boot and posted a pic. You just took the triple crown. :)

Nice find. I am on the hunt for a good snubby k frame as well. A little nail polish on the front site helps. All my fixed site revolvers get the nail polish treatment.
