My wife wants to try drinking some wine for the Christmas and NY holidays. She is not very tolerant of alcohol. The taste of it usually results in a screwed up face and puckered lips. The only wine she remembers that she could drink is Mogan David which she tried as a kid. So we're looking for something mild and sweet.
My favorite is usually a good Pinot Noir but even that is a stretch for her.

German white wines have many categories that have increasing sweet taste. Start up the ladder to find what has the right balance of taste and sweetness.

Kabinett – This is the Riesling classification that is made from the grapes that are the least ripe, producing the lightest style of Riesling wine. They tend to have lower alcohol levels (in the 8-10% range) and are often made in an off-dry style.

Spätlese - Literally translated as “late picking” refers to the Riesling grapes that are picked late during the harvest season. This Riesling typically has a medium-body and ups the flavor intensity, due to its extra days of sunshine. This Riesling classification is typically a sweet style.

Auslese - Translated as “out picked” designating ripe grapes picked out from a specific cluster of berries. This Riesling is typically crafted a sweeter version. This is the first Riesling range that may exhibit true dessert wine status.

Beerenauslese (BA for short) – This Riesling is made into the luxurious dessert wines that are sought out for their compatibility with a myriad of dessert options.

Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA for short) – Translated as “dry berry select picking” designates a late harvest, Botrytis picking, where the berries have started to shrivel on the vine, concentrating the sugars).

Eiswein – These are the famous dessert wines that are harvested from highly concentrated grapes that have actually frozen on the vine and are then pressed to produce a low-yield, high-flavor rich dessert wine.

She might like one of the "white zinfandel" wines (which actually are a nice shade of pink), and are produced by a lot of different wineries in the U.S. (Sutter Home is one brand that you see a lot.)

Another suggestion might be a German "liebfraumilch" wine, which I usually have seen in a ceramic rather than glass bottle. It is a white wine, very mild and sweet, and its name translates to something like "milk of the beloved lady" or something like that. Look for the brand "Blue Nun" which won't say "liebfraumilch" on it, but that's what it is.

Ron, I'm a Pinot Noir man myself, but you're right: that would be a bit much for her at this point.

Blue Nun is very good

From my choices you'll realize that I'm not a connoisseur and don't have what you'd call a discerning pallet. But I like a sweet wine too and pay little attention to the "robust boquet" or the "floral nose" of a wine. I leave all that business to the snobs.

A Riesling, just watch that it isn't a dry one.
Relax is a good one, blue bottle, about $8.
Barefoot also makes a decent Riesling, about $5
I'd stay away from the Plum wine that was mentioned, gaggy sweet, tastes like cough syrup.
Sweeter red wines are few & far between. Have you tried chilling the Pinot? She might find that easier to drink.
Relax also makes what they call Cool Red, it is meant to be chilled. But I haven't tried it.

glowe is absolutely correct. Rieslings are delicious and if you follow his list from top to bottom the sweeter they are. There are many good brands but my favorite is Schmitt Sohn. Enjoy.

Get a bottle of Welch's Grape Juice. Add a touch of water to it, so it isn't so syrupy. They sell it in both red and white. That's non-alcoholic Mogan David.

You also might try some of the sparkling fruit juices.

If she doesn't like the taste of alcohol, avoid the alcohol.

I, on the other hand will have a nice cabernet sauvignon with my meal.

Are no sweet wines, only evil alcohols that await t you my friend. Wish it weren't so. There are some who can drink it and some who can't, I'm among the latter.

Manasewitz is a great sweet wine, They make a Creme Red Concord and a Blackberry wine. They are exellent but, they will sneak up on you! That's good for me, because my wife gets frendly when she's tipsy:D.

Mogen David 20/20, AKA "Mad Dog", is actually not bad if you mix it with 7UP!

T Bird, Night Train, Red Rocket, MD, I liked all those way back when!
