I have a really nice rifle that needs excellent protection..
Looking for suggestions. Doesn't need to be airline approved or with wheels.Hopefully, something not excessively heavy.Thanks.

I prefer and own many of the airglide plano cases that protect the gun in the upright position instead of the gun laying...they offer both, and I own both, but prefer the guns upright and seem to keep scopes spot on from storing and moving them upright. just sayin

I have a couple of the SKB 4900 single scoped rifle cases. Good protection, decent quality and not too heavy. I'm trying to get away from the double rifle cases completely; all too heavy and bulky.

I have a couple of Pelican 1750 rifle cases that are very durable and well made...but heavy!

StarLight. I have several direct from the factory. They periodically have sales, specials and/or blemished items. The last one I got was a special on overstock OD Green cases. I didn't/don't care about color.

As for weight, depends upon what you consider "heavy".

The only hard cases I have are for my Browning Shotguns and they are the Browning hard cases that the Shotguns came in. I believe they are made by Tolex.

When I shoot Rifles I use LL Bean soft cases which are really tough Canvas on the outside and soft material on the inside.

While they are not very "pretty", the plastic hard cases with foam inside will do a good job protecting the Rifle and I believe they are very reasonable too.

Suggest look at both Pelican and SKB and see which works best for you. They are both excellent.

Pelican and Plano are excellent cases. No criticisms here.

For my Springfield Armory M-1A I decided on the Case Club model:

Case Club Waterproof Springfield M1A Rifle Case with Silica Gel & Accessory Box

I checked it out on their website before I made my decision. I like the pre-cut perforated foam that allowed me to remove only the foam that was required for an exact professional, customized fit for my rifle. There is a section for my magazines, a 1911 and magazines, and another section for cleaning tools or accessories.

Mine was about $186.00 from Amazon. I will admit, this case is heavy, but that M-1A is worth it. I personally finished the walnut stock. Takes me back to Parris Island and Vietnam when I carried (and sometime slept with) an M-14.

I like my Pelican case and would recommend them highly. However, I would also suggest you look at Condition 1 cases. I bought one to use as a tool box and as I recall, it was quite a bit less expensive than Pelican and still made in the USA.
