i have a red dot that i put on my 15-22. it is a cheaper bsa. it does ok but honestly i think i shoot as well using iron sights. my question is - is a laser used for the same application? would you choose a laser over a red dot?

Red dot or laser

I belive that you can have both in one.NcStar Model DLB140R is a new unique product offering a wide field of view Red Dot sight with an integrated red laser sight.

its my .02 that a laser isnt an item that is great by itself on a rifle its a neat feature but not a great feature by itself my ncstar has 1 and i rarely use it just because they only show up in low light and indoors... i use it alittle at indoor ranges and my wife loves it she gets to rambo it and not miss lol:D

I think red dots are the fastest way for sight acquisition.
I'm kinda an idiot when it comes to lasers and find them to be the slowest form of sight acquisition as I start looking for laser placement and end up focusing on finding the laser rather than focusing on target and shooting form. Lasers make me narrow sighted to make it short. I bet others don't have this problem but I do.
So for me standard sight and dots are much faster and more practical. Lasers are cool for the movies though.

Also I should add(not war or real combat) that when my friends and I started playing airsoft. So a friend of ours bought a really expensive gun and attached a laser to it. We went out and had a night skirmish and he was the first to die and had a hard time killing us. When ever we saw the dot we knew to take cover while his position was always given away for our team mates to open up on him. after 2 bouts his team mates told him to turn that stupid thing off.

A lot of it depends on the laser, the distance etc..

I think lasers are ideal for semi auto pistols. My Mom's hubby has a Springfield XD-M and a Viridian XL-5 combo. Green lasers are superior to red (more in the visible spectrum and far brighter) I took his Springfield at the range and said I am going to shoot the #5, not the #5 circle, the actual #5 printed on the taget and at 25-30' I shot the #5 right off the target first shot... Plus it makes repeated target acquisition blazingly fast!
