I'm looking at my first "dot" optic and really don't know what I'm getting into. I've tentatively decided on the NcStar because they have a combination of reticles that I like and seem to be fairly highly recommended for quality. There is a version with a red dot only, and a version with a red or green dot. I can't imagine how the green dot would be better, but I've never used a "dot" sight before. Is the red/green a lot better?

Personally, I just use the red. I think the green is beneficial in "lower light" settings like early morning and evening. However, if it's got the same price and features, you might as well get one with both and see what you like better.

Green Lasers do cost more, but red dots and green dots aren't powered by laser, they are Light Emitting Diodes and the price of the Diode is inconsequential.

Green lasers are more because they tend to have a higher power output and have a visible beam rather than just the dot being visible.

I prefer the green, but red is fine too. Some folks have an issue with certain colors. Yesterday I let a friend shoot my 15/22. It has a TruGlo MRDC sight (Hakko). He couldn't get comfortable with a green reticle. We switched it to red and he could see it much better.

Is it just me, or is there talk of two different subjects going on in this thread? Is the OP wanting info on a dot sight or a laser sight?

lol i think he started out not knowing what he wanted and now its just a open talk on it all lol:D

Just my 2 cent anecdotal observations.... I've looked through a couple green dot (tube) sights. The dots have looked quite star-like rather than a smoother edged dot. That might be just the quality of sight, but I've got a couple cheapo $29 BSA red dots that look a lot better than what I have seen in green.

A green dot might be more visible during bright daylight conditions because the human eye sees more shades of green (or something like that) . Though, I'm not sure the advantage of looking through a brighter dot during low light conditions. I don't shoot at night.... but usually turn down the brightness on my red dot as daylight fades.

oh man, I saw the title"Red Dot or Green Dot" I thought this was going to be about loading shotgun shells... oh well :)

I am definitely looking for a dot, not a laser. The red/green is only about $20 more so it sounds like I should just get it and try both colors.

In that case, this one (TruGlo MRDC) is tough to beat for the $$$...

Does yours not have an adjustment lock? Or is that one built on the other side?

I had originally decided on Truglo but several people said they were about the same as others(ncstar, sightmark, etc) but more expensive. The only thing I didn't like about Truglo was a lack of a plain 3MOA reticle without the ring around it. Can you compare the quality of Truglo to the others?

The only optics I have to compare it to are WAY out of its price range.

I think the MRDC can be had for $75 or so. That's pretty darn cheap.
