I just loaded up some 124 gr Speer GD, and I have a question about COL. After being satisfied with bullet seat depth and taper crimp, I am coming out with a COL of about 1.139-1.140. May manual says max COL is 1.169, so that does not bother me even though I am sure that would be for a FMJ.

I am wondering what others loading similar loads have their COL set to. I noticed I am about 15 thousandths - 2 hundredths longer than factory Speer GD 124 grains. Should I set my bullets a little deeper? Or is my COL fine where it is?

These have functioned in my gun 100%, so I am not sure if I am trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.....

Any input?

I believe you're OK. Longer lowers pressure, generally, so function is about all there is left to worry about. Since that's OK, I'd load up and go shoot.

Loading long is not as big a problem as loading short. If you load too short, as OKFC has noted, pressures will increase. Longer OAL's are better if they function in your firearm.

FWIW

Thank you guys for the responses. I guess I will just go to the range, let them fly, and be happy about it!

If you can, run them over a chronograph and see where your velocity is compared to factory. That should give you your answer. I'd bet you are just fine.
That would actually tell you nothing as aj's reloads would not have the same powder as factory. 0.015" longer is no big deal. Max. OAL will also vary frome pistol to pistol.

Max COAL is the SAAMI standard for max length to try and make all ammo fit in all firearms/magazines.

According to Speers no. 14 reloading manual their coal in their data testing for the 124gr. GDHP was 1.120". You are O.K.
