I've been reloading for a few years and casting bullets for a shorter time. Both efforts have been sucessful. I now want to try gas checked bullets. I've got the mold, sizer, checks, etc, but I'm curious about load data.
I'm going to use a medium to hard alloy - should I use jacketed bullet data?

If you have a Lyman mold then use the data for the appropriate bullet, if you have another brand of mold then I'd still use the Lyman data for the same weight or next heavier bullet.

If you can not get the Lyman data then you can approximate it using jacketed data. When comparing Lyman rifle loads using gas checked bullets to jacketed loads from other manufacturers, the maximum load is generally at the start level for a jacketed bullet. So starting at least 20% below maximum jacketed load should be a safe start load and 10% below maximum jacketed should be the maximum for lead GC bullets.

You need Lyman's Cast Bullet manual.

The focus is on cast, be they plain base of gas checked.

YMMV, but I've typically gone with weight as opposed to composition when I was experimenting. If I had a say... 265g GCSWC and I couldn't find data on it, I looked for jacketed data and started at the low end and worked it up.

Thanks,

I've got the Cast Bullet manual but forgot about it. I'll take a look when i get back home.
The mold is an RCBS .44, 225gr., GCSWC. I did find some specific data for it but my question was more general. Steve and Snapping Twig have given me good starting points.
