I bought this on a Police Letter order in 1978. Back then they were trying a new way of bluing the guns by doing the cylinders and barrels separate from the rest of the gun and it turned out that they came out two toned as did this one. I sent it back on a complaint and Mr. Magoo must have been the tech as he buffed the poor barrel lettering to death. While it was in, I had the combat trigger put on it and an action job done. Also had my initials, LGH, engraved in English scroll. While I was disappointed with the buffing and actually the engraving, I was pleased with the action job. It is one of my best shooting 29s. I left Detroit PD shortly thereafter for another department, so the gun never got used much on duty.
I recently found a few loose, original 1950-60s, 44 Magnum Lubaloy rounds in my stash and wanted to see how Elmer Keith felt shooting his Magnum loads in his 4 inchers. I must say that they were pretty snappy compared to the Remington mid-range loads I used to carry or my reloads.

Beautiful gun, I wouldn't complain a bit if it was mine. I got a 6-1/2" 29-2 in the presentation box for my college graduation present in 1982 and it was gorgeous as well. Sadly it was stolen by the maintenance man at the apartment where I lived in Dallas about 5 years later. At least it was insured.

As a young cop I wanted to carry a big bore. I got the Police Chief Letter for a four inch Model 25-5. But that revolver stayed in the Gun Safe.

I had a 25-5 8 3/8" that was two toned from that period too.

I liked that Remington mid-range load too. I believe it was a 240 LSWC at 1000 fps. Very accurate with my four inch. I also reloaded it using 2400 or Unique powder.

Thank you for sharing. It brought back fond memories of being a young cop.

Great story and beautiful stocks
Love the color
One of my old 629's is wearing similar troopers

The late Hal Swiggett was responsible for convincing Remington to produce that mid-range load. He used Unique powder, 8.8 grains with the 240gr lead bullet to achieve his desired 1000 fps. He was one of those great gun writers who wrote from real life experiences.

I think it's a wonderful looking gun and can't believe it got carried at all.
I'm with you on the initial engraving and hope you got it at no charge because they sure didn't put much thought or time in on it.
Enjoy it and thanks for sharing it and the story.
Jake
