I sure do. I and my nephew was driving up in the mountains,
stopped at a little roadhouse about a hundred miles north of
Boise for some mid morning coffee. We were the only ones in
the place except the waitress.

A couple of guys came in. I wrote a note on a piece of paper
that said "That's Tennessee Ernie Ford" and handed it to my
nephew. Ernie was looking at the juke box. My nephew called
out to him "Play something by Tennessee Ernie Ford". Ernie
smiled and came over to our table.

We had a brief but pleasant conversation. The guy he came in
with was over looking at the juke box. Ernie called out "Play
something by Dottie West". She's my favorite he said to us.

I remember in the mid 1950s he had a tremendously big hit,
SIXTEEN TONS. Do you remember Ernie? 1919 -1991

Yes Indeed

I remember him well, sixteen Tons was a big hit. My father had one of his gospel albums, which he would play on Sunday mornings as we were preparing to go to church.
I also remember his television show, he stipulated that he end the show with gospel songs.
A fine old gentleman.

A little irony is that “Sixteen Tons”, Ernie Ford’s best-known song, was just a cover of the song which was originally written and recorded by Merle Travis in the 1940s.
