On this day in 1836, Lt. Col William Barrett Travis and fellow defenders of the Alamo, after a sustained artillery barrage of 24 hours, received the ultimatum, surrender or be put to the sword.

The rest of the story is a matter of Texas history and Texan pride. Thirteen days of glory. The Alamo fell on March 6, 1836.

Texas has been working on buying property around the Alamo so they can give visitors a better "feel" for what the original size was like. I think they bought the Post Office across the square to use as a museum to house the many artifacts that has been collected.

Phil Collins, who is a British singer, has donated millions of dollars worth of Alamo artifacts plus money to help get the museum started.

I've been to the Alamo. It was a great trip and the history of the place was awe inspiring. Had the opportunity to see Custer's Last Stand this past fall. Staring out over the battle field made the whole story come alive. Now I need to get to The North Bridge, Pearl Harbor and the World Trade Center Memorial. We've truly been forged in fire.

Great and brave men! The wonderful thing about our Great Nation is that we continue to produce brave and yes, heroes, who serve everyday. One only has to look at our military , firemen ,peace officers and all first responders. These are the men and women who continually put the safety of their fellow countrymen before their own . So yes, we do have today brave men and women who stand on the wall of freedom and protect the rest of us! All my very best, Joe.

Im a descendent of Robert Evans-who was the Ordnance? officer at the Alamo. Ill post a piece that I enhanced-about the battle when I get to a computer Monday.

The smoke from the funeral pyre is beginning to drift to the Northeast this morning.

God Bless these Brave Men and God Bless Tejas!
