I own a Colt 1860 army with a date of birth of 1863 from Colt records. Other than the blue and case hardening being replaced by a beautiful pewter like patina its near perfect. I am very familiar with what to look for on Colt 1860's. However on Remington's, I am lost.

I want to add a original Remington 1858 to my collection. Can some help me on Inspectors marks, cartouches etc that id a authentic weapon and not a forged replica. What are big red flags of a forgery.

Thank You

Grip screw extrusions are a big one. A lot of fakes out there are simple defarbed repros that someone is trying to pass off. IIRC look for a gain twist rifling and even the groove twist is different.
Mike beliveau on YouTube duelist1954 channel might be a good person to contact. He is a big Remington guy.
