I bought the Remington R51 and had nothing but problems with it. Great gun when it would work, but very many failures to want to keep it. Saw that there was a recall on these models and contacted Remington. I was offered the 1911 R1 as a replacement or to wait on the upgraded model to be available. I chose to accept the 1911 and shipped my defect R51 back. It's been five weeks and nada. I called last week, and just got off the phone with them now. After waiting on hold for over 10 minutes the best they could come up with is "its processing". After pressing for why it takes over a month to ship the replacement to the FFL I supplied, I couldn't get a straight answer. In my mind it should be as easy as taking a gun from the warehouse, packing it up and shipping it to my FFL. Nothing needs processed. You made a crappy gun, I promptly returned it and now I'm waiting over a month.

Not happy

A month sounds a bit much but it really does need to be processed. You're dealing with ATF regulations and serial numbers. There has to be paperwork for what, where, why and to whom.

When I sent in a Glock they gave me a new one and destroyed the old one. Took 2 or 3 weeks. I got an official letter as to what gun I sent in, what they did with it and why they sent me a new one. Also stated that one replaced the other

I expected 2-3 weeks for them to complete the turn around. What bothered me the most was no time frame was given after calling. "Oh it's processing"
Well how long does that take? "Can't say" I feel a month is more than enough time for someone to be out a firearm they returned, especially a recall on dud a they made.

I have never been a fan of Remington but they did acknowledge their error and has offered a better and more expensive firearm in exchange. Kudos to them. They may not have any in the warehouse due to demand. I do not know for certain and am only expressing an unfounded view.

From what I have read, apparently Remington did no developmental product testing to determine all the problems existing prior to going into production. And it's a poor attempt to trade on the original Remington Model 51 name, which was probably the best-designed and most ergonomic pocket pistol ever made. Even Patton owned one.

I will say this for the R51. It was the most accurate easiest gun I have ever fired. Recoil was minimal and it shot as accurate as any gun I have fired. Unfortunatley the FTE and stove pipes ruined it. Also the trigger was the worst trigger I have felt. A bit more time and quality in to this gun and it would be a winner IMO.

It's tough to recover after the product has been tarred and feathered by customers. The Edsel was basically a pretty good car, but Ford did virtually no consumer testing before it went into production. They simply didn't believe any was needed.

The 51 was made by Para in Charlotte. Which is now closed.
