Back 50 years ago Dad taught my brother and me to shoot on a pump Remington 572 (22lr). Don't know what happened to that rifle but have wanted one in recent years just for sentimental reasons.

At an upcoming local auction later this month there is both a 121A and a 572A in the consignment. The 572 is not the Deluxe BDL model and looks to be from 1970's and is in better shape finish wise than the 121A. (121a was made from 1936-1955 and was a take down model - the Fieldmaster 572A replaced the 121A.) Gun value books list the price higher on the 121A. Both rifles are in good condition. Any reason to choose the 121 over the 572?

All other things being equal I would go with the 121, as being an older model it is likely better built. I have owned a 172 since 1981, and it is not one of my favorites. The 572 however is more suited for scope use, and that might sway you also.

The 121 is the upgraded Model 12. Rem upgraded all their rifle models in the 30's by beefing up the stocks and few other minor changes. The Models all got a '1' added to them. The 12 became the 121,,the Model 8 the 81, 14 the 141,,ect.

I'd personally go with the 121 also. Just a personal favorite. An all steel finely made pump like a Winchester 61.
The 572 was a replacement for the 121 in '56 or '57. Made to bring down mfg costs that included aluminum and plastic parts and easier assembly on the line.
I think they still make at least one version of it or at least did as of recently.

Lots of both have been made,,just the personal choice of old school,,or older school I guess.
Later production 121's will be grooved for tip-off scope mounts. Earlier ones were not and you find many that were aftermarket drilled and tapped for usually Weaver blocks. Same situation you find with the early and later Winchester 61 and 63.

Great information - Thanks! Depending on how they fall in the auction (lot number) I might end up with both!. Have a brief look at them several weeks ago but will be able to take closer look later in the month prior to the auction. Both had some pitting on metal parts but would clean up well. I like the take down feature of the 121. I have a 1958 Marlin 39A that takes down in same manner.

Can’t say I’m very familiar with the 121 but I’ve owned a 572 for 10 years (it is a 1981 mfg) and absolutely love it.
