I am selling this very rare limited production Smith & Wesson Model 617 no dash no underlug. This is a 6 inch Ashland S&W 617. Serious S&W collectors probably know this gun. Almost all other Model 617 revolvers are shiny stainless finish and fitted with a heavy full lug barrel. This is a limited run all purchased by Ashland Shooting Supplies in 1991. This limited special order run was made without the full heavy underlug beneath the barrel. Also as part of the special order, it has a factory bead blasted/satin stainless finish (not the normal shiny finish) and was fitted with the finger groove "Combat" wood stocks. The other features are standard early no dash 617 with a 6-shot stainless steel cylinder; fully adjustable rear sight with plain black blade. This run had 3 versions.
4" non full lug Product code #100563 200 made 1991
6" non full lug Product code #100565 116 made 1991
6" non full lug Product code #100567 made 1991 target model less than 150 made
Check page 300 in SCSW 4th Edition.
I am including a copy of the description sheet from 1991 in my photos. The example I have for sale here is the 6 inch non target model, product code #100565. Only 116 were made. My serial number is BEJ40**. This can be verified as the correct serial number range for this production run. The yellow blob in 2 of my included pictures is just photo editing to obscure the last 2 digits of my serial number.
I do not have the box or papers for this gun. It is not new, but it is in excellent condition for a 29 year old revolver. This gun does show a bit of a cylinder turn ring. There is a tiny mark at the end of the muzzle, but it does not interfere with the crown. There are very minor abrasions at the front of the cylinder from cleaning off carbon. The bore is in excellent condition. The finish is excellent. There is no rust, pitting or significant wear. The only other area with slight wear marks is the bottom of the trigger guard. I assume this is from being placed in a leather holster. The person I bought the gun from included a holster with it which I assume made these very minor marks. I have taken several close up, detailed pictures. I want to show it as accurately as possible because I do not want there to be any surprises for the buyer.
I am placing the ad here for a few days before posting it on gun broker. I will take a check or postal money orders as payment. Of course a personal check will need to be cleared by my bank before shipping will occur. Also many banks want to verify postal money order serial numbers before releasing funds. Evidently these are counterfeited from time to time. Shipping of the handgun will not occur until certified funds are also verified by my bank to not be counterfeit. I will ship it UPS second day air insured to your dealer. Please make sure your dealer does not mind receiving a handgun from an individual. The sale is final. This gun has been fired but not be me or the previous owner. The previous owner purchased it in 2005. I have no doubt that it is in perfect working order. The lock up is tight and it feels mechanically like a new gun even though I know from some carbon fouling it had been shot some time in the past. These do not come up for sale often. Based on my research I feel like this is a fair price for this excellent example of a very rare gun that is just lacking box and papers.
I am located in Texas. If you are the buyer, it is your responsibility to insure that this firearm is legal in your state and local jurisdiction.
If you are interested but want to make a serious offer for less, I will consider it. First one who posts "I will take it" gets it at asking price. PM or email me if you want to make an offer below asking price. Buyer pays actual shipping costs with insurance to your FFL. Thanks for looking.
