I've just ordered wood grips for my new 63 and 617 both of which came with the standard issue rubber grips. Anyone have any advice on how to remove these grips without damaging the rubber? Thanks.

After removing the butt screw, gently spread the grips while pulling them down and away from the butt. You will need to remove the fastening device at the bottom of the butt before using the wood grips. It has been a while since I have had one of these apart, but as I remember, you gently spread the steel "wings" and slip it off the butt. You can do it with your fingers.

If the the 'stirrup' wings are too stiff, the roll pin can be easily tapped out & replaced. The grips are easier to work with if they are room temperature rather than left out in the cold overnight....

Thanks for the info folks. Guess it's just the straight forward common sense. I did it a while ago on another Smith and managed to ding up the rubber grip wings when I was taking them off. I'll be a little more careful this time. Thanks again.

If the rubber grip seems like it wants to be stubborn, peel back the edge of the grip near the top just a little and put a little liquid hand soap in there on each side. That will help it slide off easier, and wipe right off afterward.

Thanks. That's where I got in trouble last time.

Now, another question. When I spoke to Hogue, I specifically said that I was ordering wood grips for the new 617 and the new 63, which is a round butt, although originally they were square butts. They gave me the order numbers and I placed the order. Looking at the catalog yesterday I noticed that the grip number she gave me for the 63 was 63800 and it's listed as a J frame SQUARE butt. Called them back and now she wasn't sure whether it would fit the round butt or not. They said they'd swap if not a good fit. If it has to go back I'll ask them to pay shipping too as I based my order on their info. I've heard that square butt grips will fit round butt revolvers but not the other way around. My question, if anyone knows, is will it fit or will I be returning it to Hogue to swap for a J frame round butt?

Don't quite understand. Are the frames originally Round Butt, or did you have someone make them round butt? Do you want Round Butt grips, or do you want round to square conversion grips?

If you had someone make previous square butt frames into round butt, you may have a lot of difficulty getting any grips to fit, if they do not follow the exact S&W pattern.

I know you CAN use square butts on round butts in most cases but depending on the grip it might make the butt area slightly larger which is good for big hands. However if you are going to conceal carry or if you have little hands it might change your mind using them.

Sorry, I could have been clearer on that. I want the 63 with round to square conversion grips. It's my understanding that Smith discontinued the 63 some time ago. The original was a square butt. They have since re-introduced it but now with a round butt. Mine is the new model with the round butt but I'd like to convert to square butt. Hogue doesn't make a J frame conversion grip. Guess she misunderstood me when I ordered and they're sending the square frame J grips. I think I'll have to send them back and go with the round butt grips.
