Back when I was just starting out I used MiniMags exclusively. The local KMart carried them and they were cheap. I loved the gold plastic boxes, and eventually stocked up dozens of them.

When Federal started selling bulk packs, I always transferred them to the old gold boxes for ease of use.

My ammo safe just ran dry of .22's, so I went into the bulk locker and pulled out a bunch of bricks for transfer. They all had the UPC codes cut off. I remembered that I bought those at Gander in 2011 and got a $5 rebate.

That was only 3 years ago. $14.99 a brick OTD.

That's my rant for today. Just glad I stocked up back then.

I started stocking up about 15 years ago. Walmart would run the Federal 550 bulk pack for $8 or $9 several times each year, and I would buy 4 or 5 boxes each time and put them up, figuring that .22 ammo wasn't going to get cheaper as the years went by. After shooting a lot of it over the years I eventually wound up with about 20 boxes still saved when the craziness hit.

I still remember one time I had 5 boxes in my cart waiting to check-out when a man behind me laughed and asked what could I possibly need that much ammo for. Bet he wouldn't laugh now to see my stash.

I donated several boxes to some local youth groups, like Boy Scouts, 4-H and such, so they could have their rifle classes, and I still have more than a dozen boxes left.

I still have about (9) 550 rd boxes of Remington 22's that I paid $5.50 a box for at a gun show in California. Make me smile a little when I shoot them and reflect back to a time when ammo was reasonable. For the last couple years I have bought any and all 22 ammo I have run across. For the first time last weekend I passed up on two 325 rd bricks of 22 at my LGS. There seems to be more available in the last six month in my area, picked up 2600 rds at a Academy a couple months ago

I still have a couple of bricks of Wildcats that are marked 8.99 - and that was only 6 or 7 years ago!

Dick's just had a HUGE shipment of .22 ammo this past weekend. They must have had thousands of the Remington 1400 count buckets and about half that much of the Winchester M22 1000 count (double brick) boxes. I did manage to get a few of the Winchesters but passed on the Remington buckets. Not only do I NOT care for Remington Rimfire ammo, but I much prefer 40 grain bullets and don't much care for the 36 grainers (given the choice).

As far as the price goes, they were NOT giving anything away! The Winchester 1000 count boxes went for $60.00 while the Remington buckets of 1400 went for $75.00. I think the cheap .22's are HISTORY!

I still have some of the orange CCI 100 round packs; I recall they were $1.29 on sale ( :) and :( combined ).

I suspect (with absolutely no certainty, or data :)) that once the usual supply and demand forces work themselves out that .22 ammo will go down in price; perhaps not back to 3 cents/round but certainly less than 6.

I still haven't bought any in the past 3 years, although I did finally see some for sale locally in the past few months.

I just ordered a brick of Norma 40 gr. LR from Midway. They had a limit of 2 bricks. They weren't cheap at $58.

22 LR Windfall

I got 3000 rounds from a friend who's late father was a ROTC instructor.

He knows I shoot but he doesn't so I'm taking him to my local range to introduce him to the sport.

I began "hoarding" .22 LR bricks back when some state lawmakers (no need to mention which political party) proposed taxing 5 cents for every round of ammo purchased..no matter the caliber. Imagine the price of a 500 rd. brick going from $15 to $40 (sounds cheap now). It actually came close to passing. I bought even more after it failed because they don't know when to quit. Bought even more around Nov. 08.
