Repost - Trying to Identify revolver and history

This is my second post, due to not posting the images properly the first time - sorry everyone!



I have recently acquired a S&W 38 revolver, that appears to be a 36-1, 3 inch barrel with a serial number of J991518. It has the rounded wood grips and is mechanically solid. Can anyone help in year or any particulars on this firearm?

The barrel isn't pinned, so it's sometime shortly after 1980.

S&W Catalog info

According to the S&W Standard Catalog, 4th ed., page 489, The manufacturing year was 1982 for your model 36-1.

FWIW, that isn't a round butt revolver.
What you posted is a picture of what is known as a square-butt j-frame.
Nice looking little 3" nickel plated model 36-1.
