The other day I bought an extra clean 629-6. It did not have a rear sight but did have a nice Bushnell Japanese 2-6x scope on a Weig-A-Tinny mount. I plan to leave it in this configuration for my shooting.
I'm wondering if I should buy a rear sight just to have?
Or to put it another way, would I recover the cost of the rear sight?

I can't claim to be an expert, but I'll try to help. There were quite a few Model 629-6s manufactured by S&W in various barrel lengths. The -6 was released in 2001 with the "Hillary Hole" (internal lock), and some were drilled and tapped for scopes and mounts. Do you have the box with end label?...that would provide a Production Code (features) and date of manufacture. I don't think that buying a replacement rear sight would a worthwhile investment, but that's up to you if you just want to have one laying around. From your description, I would think that the revolver package you have is worth around $1K, and an additional rear sight wouldn't affect that value much.

The box has 2 numbers: 163638A & 082917.
I searched the 16# and the results showed a garden variety 629 with a rear sight.

Whether I planned to use that scope or not, if I bought that gun the first thing I would do is find a rear sight for it. Since the gun is recent production, that won’t be either hard or expensive. Ten years from now… who knows?
That's the way I was leaning and I just ordered one.

I agree with M29since14, go ahead an procure the correct rear sight now, you don't know what the future holds.
