I recently bought a near mint Savage 1917 pistol that came with a mostly complete but badly damaged original box. It seems I've read on this forum of someone who's in the business of restoring gun boxes but now I can't find the post. Alternatively, is there a source for reproduction boxes? The Savage will never be a big buck collectible but I'd like to have a box for it. Any tips for a DIY restoration?

What they said!

Gary lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan---call it lower Canada. Given the prevailing weather this time of year, I reckon he much prefers to do something inside---rather than outside. Do yourself and him a favor, and send off your boxes. You'll be pleased with the results!!

He's done two for me, one in reasonably decent structural condition with a HUGE, horrible stain on top. It came back in merely EXCELLENT structural condition---and NO stain! The other was severely warped every place it had a place---with some warpage caused structural damage. It too came back---dead square--and perfectly sound. The even better news about all this is the repairs are invisible for all intents and purposes----never mind you probably know where to look.

It's worth noting both these boxes were THE boxes----for some high value guns from a loooooooooong time back---which is to say they were important pieces of cardboard!!

Not wanting to take anything away from a forum member but I believe that the place that was discussed and one that I have posted about is:

Randy’s Toy Shop
165 N. 9th St Noblesville, IN, 46060
Ph: (317) 776-2220
[email protected]

I have never used them but in viewing their work it seems flawless. IIRC correctly I was quoted $400 to repair one of my Bekeart boxes however that was a few years ago.
