I had a Craftsman 3/8" teardrop ratchet, it would slip every now and then, been doing it for years..I finally got around to taking it to Sears..
I had heard stories of Sears replacing ratchets with rebuilt ones..
Not the case for me, they replaced the old one with a new one off the shelf..
Has anyone had theirs replaced with a rebuilt one? Or have the same experience I did ?

Have heard some interesting things about Sears return policies in the last few years.

Question did your new ratchet say Craftsman on it?

One of my buddies brought back some older warranted tools and they replaced them with none Craftsman, so if that new cheaper made product goes no warranty for it. Sales guy said that was the way it is!

I had a craftsman ratchet fail about 12 years ago and I took it to the local sears store to be replaced. A rather unpleasant lady reluctantly gave me a rebuild kit for it so I could fix it myself. I later took it to another Sears store in a near by town where it was cheerfully exchanged for a brand new ratchet wrench. Somewhere around here I still have the rebuild kit.

I've had mine rebuilt twice in the last 40 years. The first time must have been back in the 80's, then again earlier this year. So the rebuild did OK.

Better hurry and get those tools replaced, Sears is closing 250 stores.

Yes stamped Craftsman, same model number..Identical to old one..

Personally, I like the idea of giving a rebuild kit.

My Dad gave me my set of Craftsman tools back in 1971. I would like to keep them as they are, as far as practicable at least.

Besides, as was previously stated, the newer versions are almost certainly cheaper and flimsier.

I've never been given a rebuild kit, but I have been given a ratchet the next level up once or twice. Would have like to have had the kit for my first replacement, which I'd had since I was 16, but it was replaced with the shiny pro model, so I didn't complain much. As for other tools, it's always been "go grab one off the rack . . ." No complaints here with Craftsman warranty replacements.

I had two replaced but they were with rebuilt ones but they worked OK.

I bought a fair amount of their tools for my construction company, but I was given as a gift a complete set of Craftsman metal drill bits. Something went wrong in their manufacturing and the literally wouldn't drill more than a 1/16th of an inch and stop. I would have to resharpen and again 1/16th of an inch and stop again. I tried two different bits with same results, so I took them back to a Sears store with only 2 of the bits used and they said sorry but their bits had no warranty or guarantee they would actually work! I never bought another tool from them.

My Dad landscaped yards for a living and carried a 3/8ths set on his tractor. He stripped the ratchets out pretty regularly. Sears replaced them several times, finally they just gave him a couple of rebuild kits.

Once I split a 3/4 drive 1 1/2" socket by standing on the breakover. They kind of raised their eyebrows and asked me how big of cheater I had on the breakover. I told them only me and I weigh 240#s. Got a new socket, no questions after that.

I really hated it when they started bringing in Taiwan tools. It's dissapointing to me to see Sears go down hill.

Quit buying Sears Craftsman a few years back when they went off shore. Lowe's/Kobalt too. If I want Chinese tools, I'll go to Harbor Freight. They have lifetime replacement as well. To the question, when I did need a Craftsman replacement, it was a re-built.

.

At the rate their going down they will join M Wards on the business scrape pile sooner than later. Best bet they will be extinct by the year 2020.

1/2 inch drive flexible head. They wanted to give me a rebuild kit. That was good for me. But, they had to order one. Three weeks to get it. I took a new one. Not as good a product.

I returned a non craftsman ratchet to sears and got a craftsmans ratchet. This was of course because I didn't pay attention when I grabbed the ratchet from the tool box and the cashier wasn't paying attention and just threw it in the box and said get a new one.

I've had them give me an inferior ratchet in place of old one and missed it till later.
Buddy had his labeled work shirt on and was told they didn't replace tools for commercial usage. He had his wife return it minutes later and no problem.

I have returned hand tools in the past and was told to grab another one off the shelf. I used to have the Sears credit card and was a regular customer for most of my adult life - until they went with Citi Bank to handle their credit card business?? I received a new credit card from Sears (Citi Bank) but I had stopped charging stuff because I was trying to get out of debt.
After a few years they sent me a bill for a couple hundred dollars, so I called and explained I had never charged anything. They refused to correct it because they do not make mistakes and told me to pay the bill. I called Sears corporate and they refused to look into it saying that I have to deal with the credit card company. I fought with both of them for about 6 months, in the meantime they damaged my credit report (it still is on my report). Then, I received a letter of apology from Citi Bank saying that they found the mistake and they were giving me a two hundred dollar store credit for my trouble. I charged $200. The next month I got billed for the $200?? I called and they could see the letter on their computer. A supervisor got on the phone and confirmed the letter but said the decimal point was misplaced and it should have been for $20.00, not $200.00 and that I should have known that it was a mistake and that I have to pay the bill. I then gave up. I paid the bill and cancelled my account and have never gone into Sears since. I hope they and Citi bank both get flushed down the toilet. YMMV. :D
