Revolvers used for steel challenge events

I was just curious about how many of you guys participate in steel challenge events with a revolver. The first time I used one for such an endeavor was about 6 years ago and I remember hating it. Since then the revolver I was using was living in the safe with brief trips to the range but its competitive days were essentially over up until this summer. With the exception of one shooting event I have shot my 10-5 6" SB non stop and have learned to appreciate the increased challenge of DA pulls and limited capacity. If any of you find yourself near southern Oregon perhaps we can rock an upcoming event with countless revolver entries.

I shoot a plate-IDPA type fun match with a 627 performance center revolver. The 8 shots help to keep up with the auto's that are used. The 357 brooms the 8" steel plates and the moon clips make a some what fast reload. One of my favorate guns although I prefer walnut and blueing. Larry

I dont compete but I love my 627. Feels great in the hand and shoots like a dream.

J frame snubs

It is a bit brash, but sometimes I like my J frame snubs, there are five shots and five plates to hit, no margin for error. If I want some leeway, there is my m.15 snub. An 8 shot moon clipped .357 would be nice, but not currently in the cards. My 625JM was OK for this, when I still had it. Revolvers are definitely realistic for steel challenge.

I have shot some local steel matches with some of my .41 Magnum revolvers. The last one was with the eight and five eighths inch M657. That gun does not approve of missing.

I used to shoot bowling pins at the old Second Chance Shoot with a six-inch M57. Lots of fun but my times were better with my custom Para Ordnance .45 ACP.

I started shooting steel plates with an 8 shot 627 PC, topped with a Ultra-Dot, using lead bullets. Cleaning 8 chambers and a barrel really got to be a chore. Especially since I was shooting lead. Sold the 627, and switched to a 9mm 1911. I really did like the 627 and am considering buying another, but will only use plated or jacketed bullets to reduce the cleaning time. The real problem comes from the fact that I started using my S&W model 41 for shooting steel. Minimal recoil, wipe it down with an oily rag after use, no scrubbing, no reloading, a little cheaper to shoot than .38's or 9mm, and much faster times. Hard to go back to a revolver.

I'v been shooting my 627 PC V-comp at are Steel Match's for a few month's know....... LOVE IT. I was using a 617 10 shot 4in. barrel, it was ok. But that 38 with a 125 gr.RN 950fps hits that steel.....SWEET.

I shot the Pennsylvania State Steel Challange match in York this summer with my 7 shot 686 with 6 inch barrel. I only used the 7th shot once each on two of the eight stages, but then I should have been shooting faster.

I just started using my 627-5 with 4" barrel for Steel Challenge type matches. I shoot revolvers better than I do autos, but for steel matches the holster will make or break you. Every draw is critical, and the IDPA legal holster I used at my last match just buried me. I'm working on a speed holster that will allow the gun to clear much faster. Once the hammer falls I lose no speed with a revolver. It helps to have at least a 7 shooter for the steel league. And there are no reloads on the clock (unless you plan to miss a lot), so you don't need to be worrying about moonclips or using moonclip specific brass. I have some cheapo Maxfire speedloaders which are perfect for the steel league but useless for everything else. Do not forget that Miculek has already won the Steel Challenge with a revolver, competing against the best auto shooters.

I shoot a S&W 627PC in Steel Challenge matches using a Hoppner & Schumann Speed Sec holster which fits any S&W revolver. I prefer picking up my fired cases 8 at a time vs bending over for each individual one.

Lonestar: I noticed that in your first picture, your V-Comp has a bobbed hammer, whereas in the third picture (the group shot) it looks as though the V-Comp does have a hammer.

Are these two different revolvers, or do you change out the hammer?

Wife and I shoot informal steel and pin matches using handloaded .38 Spl 148 DEWC's with a 1987 8 3/8" 586-1 and a 1982 brushed stainless 6" Python - both stock except for Hogue grips and HKS speedloaders.

Like to shoot steel with the M66 - just don't miss any! The speed is there due to a light weight gun and fine smooth action. Ammo is .38 130gr, Winchester FMJ.

Here's my 686 I picked up just for steel shooting. It started life as one of the Hi Viz stocking dealer specials. I had it cut for moons, put a trigger job on it and went shooting. I never got the hang of the round top Hi Viz and the V notch rear, so I swapped them out for an SDM front and a standard square notch. That's how she sits today.

I use this 627 Pro for steel plates. I really like the HiViz front and V notch rear sights. The eight round cylinder is nice to have, but in reality if you miss a shot your time will not be very competitive.

True enough, but there are a lot of spots between first and last place and not everyone is at the top of the heap. A 7 or 8 shooter means you can still push after a miss without disaster looming.

I have used both the 327 JMPC, 627PC amd 626 revolvers in both USPSA and Steel Challenge. The 625 still provides the speediest reloads. Those 230 gr. RN cartridges just drop into the gaping holes in the cylinder.
