Have 2400 some rounds through the XD to date and had 2 stovepipe on a weak hand shoot shortly after i got the gun - limp wristing probably, no issues since.
Have 300ish through the MP - not a single issue.
I still have a 1911 remington rand that has had extendsive work done to it by pachmyer. It hasnt given me problems but I never carried it for protection. I carried revolvers on my job for over 35 years and thats what I am used to. I have owned some good autos, combat commander, smith 39s, browning HP, but I am a revolver man.
I've found this debate always needs a good dose of reality. It's a concern of 'needs' vs. 'wants.'
I always had customized 1911s, and I never had a stoppage. I even carried a nickel-plated 1911 in a ******* rig in 1979. Then it dawned on me that I'd better be honest with myself.
A battalion of ninja was probably not going to attack me, and I began to doubt if I had to lay down suppressive fire across barricades just getting to a restaurant. In fact, the last year I worked as a bill collector for the hospital I downsized from the 1911 to a Bauer .25 ACP. (below)
The idea of a CCW EDC is safety and security. Yes, I like to play with 1911s, but protecting my wife and I is the true goal when walking around in our personal lives.
I feel confident and protected with J-frame SW revolvers.
I keep a model 66 in the bed stand and a 37 in my pocket. I too have had revolver fail mostly due to high primers, factory even and debris under the star. I've had more problems with auto loaders though ranging from mags to ammo related problems mainly.
Anything man made is prone to failure but I'll go with mainly revolvers as I've had my best luck with those personally. Probaly having a back up is the safest bet but I seldom do that either.
Self-stuffers need simple maintainance. Get a good quality auto, keep it clean, change the springs when worn, and use quality ammo, it will go every time. Works for me.
I carry autos during the day and have a revolver for home use when awake. For sleeping I have a "concealed" Mossberg shotgun. It stands next to the bed with a lamp shade on top. Hold on Mr Bad Guy, let me turn the light on for you!
