He was a leading light in the trad jazz revival in the UK and was the first person to have a simultaneous number 1 single in the UK and the US with Stranger on the Shore. He was a little commercial for some purists, but that is a matter of opinion.

It would seem so, but I don't recall that one being so big in the UK. Mind you, I was VERY young in his heyday.

Sad to hear this; my soon-to-be wife and I courted to 'Stranger on the Shore' in 1964. I think I still have a few of his records.
