There's a site (I won't give the name) that is selling what purports to be a .44 Russian S&W break-top 1st. Mod. DA. To my admittedly old and comparatively uneducated eyes, it sure doesn't like one to me! On top of a hefty seven grand asking price, methinks it's either ignorance or sleazy greed in trying to flog off what looks to me like one of the European copies of the S&W designs that I've seen come out of Spain or Belgium. I asked the seller for pics of the chambers and the top of the barrel flat. No response, which to me is another red flag. I've had about 6 of the 1st. Mod. DA's pass through my hands until I found my keeper and this doesn't look like any of them. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Exmilcop,

You're most definitely spot on with Your Assessment as to where this Revolver likely originated from...Definitely not something that ever left the S&W Plant in Springfield!!

Too many things to list as to what's definitely "Not" even close to being S&W related...So I'm not even going to try!!

Tell you this...Unless he finds someone that has absolutely no idea His Description is "Way" off base...The Seller's going to own that Revolver for a long, long time before it sells...Ha!!-Ha!!

I gave $100 for one VERY similar several years ago (dead giveaway is no sideplate!). It had a broken trigger return spring. I fixed it, and traded it (with full disclosure of its pedigree) for a nice set of N stag magnas to a guy that just wanted a .44R shooter.

I won't list the site it's on, but I will identify the seller.

Guns Dot Com...

They're either crooks or idiots. Neither is someone you should deal with...

Chris,

Just an FYI...The Revolver the OP posted a photo of "Does" have a Sideplate...It's just that it's hardly noticeable in the Photo he posted...I think if you take closer look you'll see it!!

From what I've heard of other people's experiences with that website, I'm not likely to use it. Unless Guns Dot Com owns the gun, you have no contact with the actual seller of the gun.

I am no expert, but it just doesn't "look" right. If there's doubt, don't. I would walk away. The internet is a great place from which to unload guns, that won't otherwise sell, to unsuspecting buyers. Temptation notwithstanding, I won't buy a gun I can't examine FIRST before fronting money.
