RIP Ron Ely, AKA Tarzan for many of us

I vaguely remember Ron Ely as a panelist on quiz shows (or 'show') but I never saw him on any program. Only knew of him as the actor who played Tarzan. There has been a VERY slight interruption in the announcements of passing for icons of 'our' era. Sad to see them begin again.

The gals liked him!

Actually thought Ron Ely was an excellent Tarzan especially considering it was a weekly T.V. show with all the pressures and schedules unique to that venue versus movies. I liked his relationship with the boy, think his character's name was Jai, though he never seemed African but rather Indonesian or something.

I was pre-teen and thought Tarzan was pretty cool; educated too! I remember the girls thought he was quite a hunk.

At the time I did not know Ron Ely portrayed Tarzan closer to as it was written than Johnny W. who to me will always be the definitive version. What I missed in the show was a Jane. Even at 7 year old I could appreciate feminine jungle wear even if I wasn't sure why.

That sounds like me when I first saw Diana Rigg as Mrs Peel at age 6. I thought, "That's nice, but I'm not sure what I would do with it if I caught one."

Son of Tarzan

Tarzan semi historian. My dad was Mr. America in 1943 (3rd place) and actor & writer and intro'd me to the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan. At age 5, for my birthday, dad bought me Tarzan's loin cloth and Johnny Sheffield's too. I practiced swinging on a rope in an a giant oak tree for months at our home in Studio City. Later in life. 50 years later, I wrote a modernized treatment for Son of Tarzan and pitched it to the Burroughs Foundation in Tarzana California. They liked it but powerful Disney bought the rights (ancillary) and I was done. Coincidentally, a few weeks later I was introduced to an aged Johnny Sheffield and we had lunch and discussed the movie business. I knew more than he about the works of Burroughs character. It's still a dream. I also met Gordon Scott through a friend in Marina Del Rey. He was old but still quite a dynamic man. I enjoyed Chris Lambert's version very much although I think the original Weismueller was a classic. Except for Gordon Scott's great physique, the others were a bit lacking in athletics and acting ability. I think producer Mel Gibson could do a great rendition of Son of Tarzan in the same type of production as his film Apocolypto. I met his producer at a party recently and I wanted to pitch him but held back, thinking it might be a bit tacky. I don't know if the modern audience would appreciate another Tarzan ... too bad!
