Riser Needed for a Red Dot Sight?

I have the M&P 15-22 with the MBUS Magpul iron sights and am wanting to add a red dot sight and perhaps later, a magnifier to go with that.

Do I need any kind of riser for the pict rail? If so, how high should it be. I would like to co-witness the red dot with my MBUS sights.

I am looking at several red dots, some the 'scope' style and some the other wider glass, which I prefer do to my older eyes.

Thanks!

lower 1/3 co-witness or absolute co-witness?

For an absolute co-witness, use a lower riser:

for a lower 1/3 co-witness, use a slightly higher riser:

It would depend on the particular red dot and, as shown above, how you'd like to set it up.

An Aimpoint PRO, C More rail, or Vortex Strikefire won't need a riser if you want to absolute cowitness.

Something like an RMR will need a riser of some sort, regardless.

Thanks all for the assistance. I am looking to use the red dot sight exclusively, but if that goes down for some reason, want to be be able to use the MBUS iron sights without interference of the mounted red dot. Right now, I am looking at the Vortex Sparc II, Votex Venom 3MOA, Vortex Razor, Aimpoint PRO, Burris Fastfire II or III, Primary Arms tactical reflex sight 5MOA or 2 MOA or Microdot, or Holosun 4XX or 5xx sights.

Yeah, I know, a lot of them to choose from, so any help will be appreciated.

THANKS!!!!!!!

That always sounds like a good idea but usually ends up with the iron sights just an annoyance and in the way and an extra battery in your gear bag for the red dot being a better idea...

Any thoughts on the Bushnell TRS 25? Can be bought with a riser which I believe is 1" but can also be purchased without and you buy your own riser? Seems like a good optic for the money

AGREED! Just take off the iron sights and store them in your gear bag along with an extra battery.

It's a good sight for .22 and a good value but the quality is inconsistent. You can find multiple reports of issues such as disappearing dot near the edge. However, Bushnell's warranty will get it fixed although you have to pay shipping.

If you decide to go with the TRS-25, the 1" riser is a bit high for co-witnessing standard AR15 sights. It's a bit lower than lower-1/3 and not really usable.
