Rock Island 1911

My gun show buddy kept talking about how good those Filipino 45s were so I decided to pick one up. He didn’t mention brand name so I ended up with a Metro Arms Commander. Shoots like a champ but I had to change out those cheesy grips. The initials in the hammer look a bit goofy too but I guess I can live with them. When we compared his RI wth my Metro, my gun had the nicer finish.

If I ever get into 1911s, I plan on buying either an RIA or Springfield make. Mainly due to the price, although I'm not sure what Springfield's are yet, so that may matter.

Would probably give it some tuning as a starter 1911 for me. If I liked the platform then eventually I would get a Colt, or not if I was satisfied with the other. I've heard good things about RIA 1911s.

Last year my LGS had a slightly used FSII in 9mm for a price I couldn't walk away from. I had been wanting a 9mm version of the 1911 and there it was. It came with 2 Wilson mags and I bought 2 additonal after market ones. I have yet to have any kind of problem with it and it is very accurate.

A few years back I bought a used Phillipine 1911 5" .45 as a woods beater. A 'Charles Daly', no longer around, but still serviced by RIA if needed.
In 1911's, I'm a Colt guy, didn't expect much and expected some issues.

Was almost peeved at it's performance. It had a Wilson mag, as all mine are. Perfect function with every bullet weight and profile. More accurate than needed for it's intended task - woods beating. Not a match pistol but better than many stock 1911's.
I'd say the RIA's are a good value.

Picked up a Rock Island on sale, it is a sweetheart to shoot, absolutely no problems in 2 years and several thousand rounds, very accurate at 88 yards and naturally closer!

I have one of their 45acp 1911 CS compacts that I got second hand at an auction for a couple of bills. The recoil spring was worn out and it didn't want to fully return to battery the first time out. I emailed them and they sent me a free replacement. Put it in and it has functioned 100% reliably with everything I've put through it since.

I loved mine, I've had far less issues with them than most of the Springfields I've owned. I got a Dan Wesson that replaced the numerous RIAs I had, but that's just because I needed to have a status symbol sweet 1911. If I was buying a new 1911 under $700 I'd go RIA in a heartbeat.

Jake1945 re:ATI

I have an ATI 45acp government full size and love it. Made in the Philipeens (sp). And, GI issue/clone parts fit.
I love shooting mine, same pistol, nice weight, no kick for a .45acp. I did not see this reply before I posted above. Does yours have any problems with hollow points? I have the same question a couple more recent posts above this one. Jeff T., PGH, PA

I bought a RIA Target years ago and shot it quite a bit. I had my 1911 smith do the trigger and it was a wonderful shooter. The smith said the critical hammer and sear pins were dead nutz in place which is the problem with many of the less expensive 1911's and the triggers can never really be made right. The trigger was so good I decided to turn the receiver into a .22 with a NightHawk/Marvel conversion. It is a really nice shooter.

A .38 Super really intrigues me. But it is another caliber to reload. How different is it from a .40? Bob

Can't really say. I have a Delta in 10mm but no experience with the .40 Short & Weak.

The Super is more pleasant to shoot and has great penetration. The .45 is more accurate. The 10mm has done well hunting whitetails. All of them please me.

I have 3 RI's. a 45 A1 Tactical, a single stack 9mm, and i just purchased the 22 TCM (which has a 9mm barrel with it as well, double stack mag.)
All have performed beyond what is would expect for the price range. Both the 45 A1 and the single stack 9 are very accurate, no FTF or FTE, I've never had an issue with either of them. I shot two boxes of TCM and it's a hoot.... very loud but negligible recoil.
