I have been wanting one of these for a while. I finally found one locally and fondled it. Wow, what a disappointment :( I know they are lower cost, $475 at my LGS but it felt even cheaper than that. The finish was basically black paint. The safety felt like it was an afterthought that could fall off at any moment. The action felt like there was a handful of sand in it. Does anyone have one or any first hand experience with a ranch hand? I welcome all opinions.

If you want one to shoot, hold out for a Winchester Trapper Model 94, they were available in 30-30, .357 and .44 Mag (maybe some other calibers too, I'm not sure) They're harder to find and more expensive but there is no comparison. I'd suggest getting one without the ugly hammer block safety, nothing wrong with it's functionality but it sure is ugly.

+1

Had one come into the LGS a few weeks back, and it wasn't great. Felt cheap, looked cheap, priced not so cheap. Gritty lever action, and just not impressive in any way. If I wanted a solid Mare's Leg, I'd go with the offering from Henry. Not exactly inexpensive, but much better quality than the Rossi. There's some folks who don't care for the newer Henry items, but Henry is a company that stands by its products, and is readily accessible should there be any problems.
