Royal Navy Field Gun Competition....

Last time I saw this competition (years ago) they were using bronze muzzle loading cannon. I think it was inspired by British naval gunners and guns being used as field artillery during the Napoleonic Wars.
I forget just how many smashed hands and feet there were during the run.

The Royal Navy and The Royal Marines have a centuries long history, as has the British Army, of putting ashore expeditionary forces to bring some tribal chieftan back into line. I believe they were also inportant in Wellington's Penninsular Campaign against Napoleon.

110 Meter High Hurdles draggin a cannon.
Should be a Summer Olympic event, beats Syncro Swimming.

Wikipedia has a good account of the competition and according to them, it originated as a result of some action that occurred during the Second Boer War in South Africa.

Neat

Very neat to watch. As a foot note-there's an 18th Abn. Corps artillery outfit that drops 155s (M198s)-the standard is to have a round down range within 30 minutes of hitting the drop zone-----at night-any weather--they have to find the gun-un pack the thing-then move it around--no spectators.

No face guards or pads, and no re-hydrating! Amazing stamina, coordination and strength.

As an aside,,on the bottom of the completed clip, an assortment of other similar videos appear for viewing. Check out the Marine in 'Rifle Spinning'

Oh man! Talk about having to dig deep & recover fast! I thought the race was over after the 3 rounds were sent down-range...but...they have to go BACK?! That's a torture session!

Honestly that was one of the most impressive combos of brute strength, agility & team-work I have ever witnessed!

Thanks for sharing...I think I will not cheat on my gym-day today. :D

Having crewed a small howitzer through the woods and up trails...it amazes me how difficult it would be to march these guns through a Winter campaign, cut trails for them, and get them into position in time, to be a affective part of a battle....

It was amazing to watch this competition. I cannot think of any other that requires as much pure force of adrenaline/stamina and a willingness to ignore physical pain or injury......

Incredible.
