Rubes Steakhouse, Montour Iowa

I was born and raised in Iowa and I had to look Montour up. What brings you to the middle of nowhere?

Try the Machine Shed in Urbandale (West side of Des Moines); great food.

I lost a bet to a buddy and he picked Rubes as the place for me to pay off. If you have not had a steak there, go the first chance you get, you won't regret it.

Is it as good as The Cattleman's Steakhouse down at the stock yards in OKC? That was still a place worth going out of your way for about 10 years ago.

You guys know your Iowa restaurants. The Machine Shed is fantastic, my Wife and I go there every time we go to Des Moines. I gain about 5 lbs. every time.
Yes, Rubes is still awesome. You cook your own steak on an open grill. They are HUGE. Vegans need not apply. It isn't even all that expensive. Went there with the in-laws about a year ago, still very good.

Thanks P@R, I haven't been in a couple of years and can't wait! I will Try the Machine Shed on the way through.

I stop at the Machine Shed in the Quad Cities for breakfast on my was to SD each year. I have stopped at the one in Des Moines in the past also.

Having been born in Des Moines and lived in Iowa City, I will attest to Rubes -- a truly great steakhouse. There was an even better one -- The Lark, a 1950s style supper club -- in Tiffin, 10 miles northwest of Iowa City which later relocated to IC, but then closed forever. That was truly a loss.

For those of you going across South Dakota, there is a place called Bob's on US 212 on the east shore of the Missouri River, just before you enter the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Bob's is not as splendiferous as either Rubes or the Lark, but when a steakhouse has only three items on the menu -- "Large Steak," "Small Steak," and "Steak Sandwich," you know that the food is great -- they got it goin' on! :D

Sorry to wander a bit of topic, but a funny family moment was when we took my father to a similar "cook it yourself" style restaurant many years ago.

Was some special occasion as I recall, I think his birthday. First time any of us saw our father PO'd and annoyed with family. Normally a very jovial guy that enjoyed family and family gatherings immensely.

I believe what he said without humor was " I don't go to a restaurant to cook my own food. If you expected me to cook, I would have stayed home and done it on my own grill!"

Very out of character as there wasn't much that normally bothered him. Guess we found out what one of his hot buttons was that night.

Although I enjoy them, can't go to one of those type restaurants without remembering that day.
