I was in the market for another small gun for me and the wife and I had a Ruger 10/22 takedown, which was ok but I had to sell it to make some bills. So I went and picked out a 10/22 compact this time. I like the sights better on this gun and the takedown feature is nice but since it will be at the house most of the time I don't really need it. I do like the short 16 inch barrel. The finish on the gun was awful, at least as a clear coat. It was dead flat and not very smooth, in a couple spots like sandpaper.

I got the gun for a good price, $60 less than the takedown and I took it home and gave it three coats of Tru-oil which not only makes it nicer to look at but also to grab on to. I hope to get to the range in the next couple of days.

Why do you not like the 16" barrel? I think that would be a desirable thing. I have an old 10/22 and wish it had a short barrel. I don't want to modify my rifle because of its sentimental value. Otherwise, I would trim that bad boy back a few inches. I'd go 12 to 14 inches if it were legal.

I do like the 16 inch barrel, in fact if I ever get some money together I might get the tactical heavy barrel version with the bipod for myself. With a nice scope that would be very nice on small game and little varmints up here.

Did a nice job David. Whenever I see a 10/22 it reminds me of my first one. Made in 66 with walnut stock back then and retailed for $56. Still a decent buy today in my opinion. Am happy with my R/A compact in 22 mag. and greatful the bluing is satin and not matte.

I don't have the tactical version, but I did have my 10-22T barrel shortened. It's a bit over 17", because that was the shortest it could be cut without cutting into the warning label flat under the barrel. I had it cut and threaded for a suppressor, but the weight reduction improved balance and handling.

The stock is a long out of production Corelite. The Hogue stock that Ruger furnishes with the 16.5" heavy barrel tactical has a similar comb profile, which works well with optics.

If you want to cover that glossy scope without a paint job that you will regret, use a long or compound bow limb cover. They snap or Velcro into place.

I too like the shorter 16 inch barrel. I recently purchased a Takedown LITE with the 16 inch threaded barrel and I find the setup to be a quite handy size.

Actually the scope has been replaced with a matte finished 4-12x.

The glossy 4-12x was sent back to Leupold and now has target knobs. Will probably wind up on a Browning 1885 High Wall.

Waiting for Ruger to make that in a non-takedown bull barrel or lite version. Every takedown version I've handled has barrel shank wobble. The barrel shank to receiver mating needs to be tighter. Personally I would only want a 10-22 takedown with barrel sights or a cantilever scope mount, and the latter kinda defeats to a certain extent the compactness of a take down gun.

The 10-22 version of the American Rimfire stock is the style of stock they need to offer on all their synthetic stock 10-22 models, as it can be easily modified for optics or iron sights.

There is an adjustment that you do for that. It's in the owners manual and there are several YouTube videos that show you how to do it. I've got mine snugged right up.
