Picked up a Ruger American in .308 today for my son from Walmart. I had no intention of buying a rifle, but when I walked past the display, it called to me. Actually, the clearance tag marked $188 called to me... that was less than I paid for my Ruger American .22 lr!

Now I need to find a deal on some quality glass for him and he will be all set.

$188!!!! What a deal!

I have the Ruger American in 30/06, they are great rifles. Lightweight and accurate.

I have a Redfield "Revelation" 2 X 7 variable scope on mine, it is made in America at the Leupold factory, it is essentially a Leupold Vari-X I with a Redfield label. Scope and rifle combination weigh just under seven pounds.

The Redfield Revelation can be found for $229 or so, $50-70 less than a Leupold.

If this .308 shoots anything like the .22 lr RAR I purchased, I will be extremely happy.

I'll have to check out the Redfield scopes.

I actually bought a Ruger American in 22 magnum earlier this year. It was so cheap. I put a 4X scope on it. I prefer a bolt-action 22 over all the semi-auto stuff that has been exclusively out there for decades. The Ruger shoots beautifully. The best part is that it will shoot anything you put in it. Not at all like those crummy autos.

Seems like a really good price, congrats.

Mine in 308 shoots good. It was my first "budget" rifle and wanted a short action this time since the others I have are long actions and tend to be on the heavier side of the carrying equation.

Little things like the plastic magazine seem a bit chintzy, but has held up and have not encountered any hangups or issues while shooting it. The glass can be as much or more than you paid for the rifle. Mine wears a 3x9 vortex crossfire.

Ever wonder how W-M is able to sell guns retail for LESS than dealers can buy them? Great for buyers, but bad for the LGS. Local W-M selling Colt LE6920s for $699.00.

W-M apparently buys at distributor price, and sells somewhere between distributor and dealer. They do this with ammo as well. And, I suppose most every other product in their stores.

Not only that, but they buy in bulk. Anyone who wishes to become a distributor and meets the qualifications can, but the price goes down as the number of guns purchased goes up. I can be at any of 7 or 8 walmarts in about a half hours time. And they all sell guns. The closest is only 5-10 minutes away.

If you want to sell you Walmart you do it their way and at their price. They are so big They can do it their way and if you don't agree, than your products don't get in their stores. Your call.
Oh and also they make you keep on stock so much product-you are their warehouse-they make you bear that expense. They are so big they can do that.
I represented a small lure maker years back and had an opportunity to review one of Walmat's supplier contracts. Brutal to say the least. Their negotiation strategy-don't like it; f you- go sell somewhere else.
On a base level, I could respect that :D

This past weekend I searched our local WM's looking for that deal but came up empty. WM web site doesn't even show that rifle at all. Oh well. It must be a regional special. Only similar rifles at my local WM were Savage, don't remember the models. Prices were much more than the OP paid.

That works for me!

I wish I could find a local WM that had that rifle at that price. None of the WM stores in Austin, TX sell any firearms. The local Cabelas has their Savage Axis rifles at $219.00, which isn't bad, in my opinion.

Dave

I was in a WM yesterday looking for sale priced ARs but they were all
gone. I also looked for Ruger American bolt rifles but didn't see any.
Most of their bolt rifles were Savage or Remington. Brands of ammo
and guns seem to come and go at WM.

That sure is an incredible price. I bought a R/A 22 mag. compact also last year and with tax it came to $288. You paid $100 less for a centerfire!! I may have gotten hosed but I have to admit that the R/A rimfire is one accurate rifle. Nothing really chintzy at all. Makes one great woods rifle for varmint hunting.
