Look for the French police versions of these in news photos. I like the checkered stocks, but some have the rear sight on the rear of the barrel. I think they should leave it on the receiver.


They seem to have more than one form, depending on whether the rifle is issued by the Gendarmerie Nationale or local forces.


These seem to have replaced the MAT-49 SMG on most forces.
Maybe Cyrano knows more. He's pretty well up on French arms and has friends there.


I've read that this design isn't known for great accuracy, but it'll probably do to blast a terrorist down the block.

I believe you are confusing the Ruger Mini-14 and the Ruger AR-556. The latter is an AR-15 clone; the former a wooden-stocked carbine with a design sorta similar to the M-14 or M-1 carbine.
I think what the French have is variations of the Mini.
 
The Ruger 556 is a very decent little AR. My son, who is a decent shot (with good eyes!) used one to get a little practice before deploying again. From prone, with ball ammo, he hammered a steel torso target at 300 yards/prone constantly. Iron sights. So, yes, it will deliver the mail.

About the only thing it lacks (?) is the chrome bore...the need for which is debatable. $499 is darn good for that gun with a warranty. I can't part an equivalent one together for that; plus I have assemble it and "warranty" it myself.

So I'd say he and Ruger did well.

Jimmy, I think your G.S. did just fine, I found the one I have to be a fun and accurate little carbine, after I added a Strike-Fire red dot aiming device.

For folks such as myself, who only want/need a entry level all around rifle the Ruger is a great option.
 
In the 1980's, the French also bought Ruger's full auto version of the Mini-14 in full and folding stocks called the AC-556 (and AC-556 K). The Ohio Highway Patrol had them also. Looked great, functioned fine, if you were lucky; in semi auto you could keep a 2 foot group at 200 meters from prone (full stocked) the folding stocked guns typically patterned between an improved modified and a full choke on a 12 gauge!

Back in the early 1980s I spent some time in the middle east-Persian gulf-North Africa area and saw quite a few versions of the Mini-14 being carried around by (I assume) police or various paramilitary organizations. I didn't try to get a closer look as I was happy in keeping my distance from those people. I do remember many of them had folding stocks.
 
Don't be so quick to dis the Mini 14. If it's good enough for Hannibal, BJ ,Murdoch and Face it's good enough for government work.
