My pistol has had a parts swap with an earlier Mk. II. My pistol can now fire with magazine out chamber loaded. Can I drop a 22LR cartridge into the chamber of a Ruger Mi. III 22 LR pistol — that is, will doing single shot shooting, by directly loading the chamber, harm its feed, extraction, or ejection? I ask because I remember that chamber loading some mechanisms is harmful.

I don't advise dropping a round in the chamber and closing the bolt. Since the extractor on a Ruger is spring loaded it won't do any damage if loaded this way a few times, however it will cause excessive wear over time.

Ruger Mark extractors are like $3 each, or about $11 for better, harder aftermarket ones. Reasonably easy to replace. Don't worry about it.

I own 7 Ruger Mark pistols BTW.

Same extractors in a Ruger 10/22 oddly enough.

I single load CB caps in my MKII and have suffered no damages .
I lock the slide back , drop a CB cap into the chamber and lower the bolt on the loaded chamber . The CB cap doesn't work the slide but I retract the slide manually and the fired case extracts and ejects ... locking the slide back readies it for another CB cap .
I used to raise rabbits for "home consumption" and a CB cap to the head was the quitest, quickest most humane way to dispatch them ... I fired a lot of single loads over about 10 years of rabbit raising .
No damage has been incurred , still shooting the MKII . No more rabbit raising .

Naphtali, No you will not damage your pistol loading it that way.

Why would you want to load one round at a time into the chamber?

I don't think my fat fingers could do that.

If you want to shoot one round at a time just load one round at a time in the magazine.
