My dad bought a Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag in the late 70s.

I have never liked shooting it because of the grip. it does not fit my hand.

is there a quality conversion for a Bisley grip to fit my gun.

my gun

Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk blue 7.5" barrel 44 mag #81-2xxxx

I often thought about selling it to get a Bisley grip but still have it.

thanks in advance

I do not think you can retro fit a Bisley frame to a regular frame-I think you have to sell the gun and buy what you want.

I had the same problem with my .41 Magnum Blackhawk , so I replaced the standard aluminum grip frame with one from a stainless Super Blackhawk.

You can occasionally find one on the auction sites.

FWIW , the original Colt Bisley Model had a slightly different frame/grip frame interface. But I'm not 100% sure on the Ruger.

Also , I think there was an aftermarket grip frame. Check Brownells.

You can put a Bisley grip frame on a new Model if you can find one but they are hard to find right now. The pic is of a Ruger New Model 45 Colt that I put a Bisley grip frame on. There might be some minimal fitting but they are generally a pretty close fit.

I've put a couple of the Ron Power steel grip frames onto Rugers.
It's not a bolt on project as they do need to be fitted and then polished and blued.
The ones I did were 2-piece Colt style and were fitted to O/M FT 44 Blackhawks.
Brownells used to sell them, don't know if they still do.
They did offer different ones for N/M Rugers as I recall.
Probably in stainless too.

A quick look and I found this Power Custom grip frame for the N/M Rugers in the 'Keith #5 Bisley' configuration
Keith # 5 Grip Frames - $275.00 : GrandMasters L.L.C., GrandMasters L.L.C.

Something different for sure,,

I have a Hogue custom finger groove stock in Goncalo Alves that may help you out, much larger than the original. I don't like it 'cause it just looks odd on my Blackhawks. If you'd like pics PM me. It's still in the original package, never fired on the gun.

I definitely don't want to fit.

Why is mkk41 and macbullet grip frame different. I like the grip on macbullet's gun better for my big ol hand.

I may be better off selling and getting a bisley gripped gun....but looking at the ruger website does not show any 44mags.

Smithhound....I will pm you tomorrow. I am on my phone which makes it difficult to manuaver on this site. I do want to see those grips.

Thanks for the info

Thanks.....I was in a hurry and missed that one.

How does the new models compared to the older ones like I have?

Dang....wished there was a shorter barrel option in the area of 4-5".

Sir, as you'd expect, the late '70s guns seem to be finished better than the current versions. I've heard that some current Ruger SAs have some sort of lock thing, but I don't know if that's correct.

FWIW, I'd also like to see Ruger bring out a non-Vaquero Bisley in a shorter barrel length. There are some distributor exclusive Bisley Blackhawks with shorter barrels out there (I've seen some in .45 Colt with 5-1/2" barrels), but they're not easy to find and expensive when you do find them.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I like everything about my RSBH except when it goes bang.

The lock up feels solid and the trigger break is crisp.

I recall it causing pain where my middle finger rubs underneath the trigger guard...and that was with pac's.

I may have to re think my wants.

Thanks to all...I need to do more research

Have you tried different grips? Theres probably aftermarket grips that you can buy. If all else fails, you can make a pair which will truely be custom. Just a suggestion, good luck.

Any after market grips fit my hands better than Rugers originals. Most of my blackhawks [5] get black grips. Yes they are ugly, no they don't allow my hand to roll with recoil as well but they cut my group sizes remarkably.

I just ordered a new one with 5.5" barrel chambered in 44 special. Sooooo excited

What grips are you referring to? Pacs?

The more I think about this....bisley conversion and shorten the barrel to around 5.5 sounds like what I want.

I could easily sell and buy another but want it in 44 mag to have the ability to shoot mags or specials, reduce the barrel to a handier length plus keeping my dad's gun.

Now if I can stop buying other gun stuff.....

SW CQB 45 , exactly what Ruger .44 do ya have?

First ya say it's an old Blackhawk , then ya say it's a New Model Super Blackhawk.

Ruger made .44 mag Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks in original (3-screw) and New Model (2-pin). The New Model came out about 1973.

Super Blackhawks had the larger Dragoon grip frame patterned after the Colt Walker model as carried by yer pictured Outlaw Josey Wales. Along with non-fluted cylinder , wide spur hammer , wider grooved trigger and much higher polished blue finish.

The Blackhawk grip frame is significantly smaller.

New Model grip frames will not fit old models.

A pic would help.

Ruger used to make the New Model Super Blackhawk Bisley 7.5" .44 Magnum. #85-466xx was one of the first and came with a fluted cylinder. Apparently Bill Ruger was not happy with the appearance of the first unfluted roll marked cylinders so a few thousand of the first .44 Mag Bisley's went out with flutes.

My title is incorrect.

I recall as a kid....my dad coming home 1976ish with 2 rugers

.22 semi auto and
New Model Super Blackhawk unfluted cyl 7.5" barrel blue 44mag

I will snap some pics tonight

Here is my piece

I just need to shoot it. my dad used to reload for effect. flame and recoil pushing loads to the end of the spectrum. I was the opposite...I like to practice and not tear up the gun. I need to load some mild manner Specials or Mags.

I have his reloads....but dont want to shoot them.

I cant recall the last time I shot it...maybe 20 plus years ago and it was not pleasant and I know it was punisher loads. I may just want to shorten the barrel and just shoot it with fun loads.

thanks to all for the help
