Just acquired a used Ruger SP-101 DAO. While I have numerous Rugers, this is my first SP. While it is heavy, it feels nice and balances nicely. Range session went well. Added the stag inserts and thinking about a Gemini Customs Small Wonder Fiber Optic Front Sight. Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake enroute. Let’s see yours and tell me what you like about the SP-101. Thanks!

I have a Gemini Custom with the fiber optic. Well worth it. I find it A bit heavy for a 5 shot 38 so I carry my 442 or Colt Cobra most of the time. I mainly use it as a trainer for new shooters. The extra weight, nice grip and fiber optic makes it enjoyable to shoot.

Have had mine for a LOT of years and have to admit I really haven't shot it much. 357's tend to be a bit painful for me to shoot and even with 38's I really don't shoot it that well. It is a well made piece of equipment though and will be up to the task if ever called upon I'm sure.

What I liked about my sp101 was that I was able to sell it for what I bought it for. They are way too heavy for their size. The stock trigger it came with was ridiculously heavy, and it stacked and staged like no other trigger I've ever felt. I've got a Bryco Jennings 9mm I inherited from my grandad, it is a superior firearm to every sp101 I've ever put my hands on. The sp101 turned me off of Ruger handguns all together. I am a fan of the RPR though.

I'm glad you love yours and I hope it serves you well.

Got rid of mine, heavy, horrible trigger and a handful to shoot. Left a bad taste in my mouth for Ruger revolvers. Carry an old Colt Cobra now and love it. Great trigger and holds 6.

I did get a heck of a deal on a GP100 and it has restored my faith in Ruger. Silky smooth trigger and accurate.

Nice purchase, and great looking with the inserts. No one can knock the quality and ruggedness of the SP101; just too heavy for me. :)

I worked on my DAO SP101 quite a bit and put a spring kit in. It's now a nice shooting gun. One thing to keep in mind is when changing out the front sight is if the height of the replacement sight is different your POI will change.

I bought a model 5720 like yours six months ago and the longer I've have it, the more I like it. I added hammer shims, hammer dog shims and a 10# Wolff mainspring and the trigger travel is long but smooth. The stock grip was too small for me so I experimented with Hogue monogrip, Pachmayr Diamond Pro and Pachmayr wood grips. Both the Hogue and Diamond Pro tame recoil very well but the great looking Pachmayr wood grip punished my hands especially with 357s. I tried OWB and IWB. AIWB works best for me and I don't feel the weight of the gun. I settled on the Hogue monogrip for AIWB because it's longer and I get a good grip when I draw vs the shorter Diamond Pro. I found an old Bianchi suede IWB holster the most comfortable and got one on ebay for $10. People either love the SP or hate it. I like the extra weight making extended range trips comfortable. More range time = more accuracy. A gold bead front sight would be an improvement IMO. As far as being too heavy, the Colt Cobra and Kimber 6 only weigh @3 oz less than the SP.

Nice Gun

Heavy, Yes. Sometimes that's a good thing. A Beltman horsehide belt and a Mitch Rosen 5JR Express holster do a fine job dealing with it and the trigger gets better with use.

Thanks for the heads up on the Mitch Rosen holster. I really like my Beltman double stitched dual bull hide w/stiffener. I think I could hang a Buick from it.:D

Oops, what was I thinking?

Can’t post about my Gemini Custom without pics. This is the base package. Action job, fiber optic, some chamfering and a satin frame with polished accents.

I would have replaced the grips but I find the stock rubber perfect for the range.

Several years ago, I had an SP101 that I carried for backup on duty at my PD job and off duty. Heavy and chunky little gun but I loved it. It always shot well and was more accurate than such a short barrelled gun should be.

When I bought mine, it seemed that Ruger was saving money on trash removal by dumping floor sweepings into the actions and shipping them out. It was an absolutely filthy mess, full of dirt, gunk and metal chips. It took me 2 or 3 hours just to get it all out of the action. Once cleaned, the action was heavy but fairly smooth. I found a guide to detail stripping and polishing on one of the Ruger forums and went to work with my fine knife sharpening stones. I didn't really remove any metal so much as polishing and de-burring the parts. Once reassembled, it was silky smooth. The trigger was still a little heavier than my S&W M649 because I kept the factory springs for maximum reliability, but it was even smoother.

Once I started carrying and shooting it, I found that the hammer spur was sometimes catching and snagging on heavy winter clothes, so I bobbed it myself. While it still had the SA sear on the hammer, it was bobbed so that it was pretty much impossible to manually cock it. DAO is the way to go in a defensive gun, anyway, so not a big deal to me.

Once I had it set up the way I wanted it, I bought some grip panels from a guy on one of the Ruger forums that was selling them. Really classed up the little gun and I carried it happily for several years. Due to severe budget cuts, the small PD I work for went to only 1 guy on duty for most shifts. We were mandated to come out and help when off duty if the on duty guy needed help. Although I was pretty good at reloads, I realized that I would never be able to reload the SP101 as fast or as fumble-free as an auto, so I went back to the Glock 26 that I had previously been carrying off duty. I wasn't really happy with the G26, so as soon as S&W came out with the 9mm Shield, I managed to find one (after a couple months of searching!) and still carry it off duty to this day. When my mother got her CCW and decided that, due to severe arthritis in her hands that she couldn't grip the slide of an auto hard enough to reliably cycle it, I gave her my S&W M649 and SP101. I miss them, but take comfort that they protect her. I also know that, one day, I will get them back, although I'm not looking forward to that.

And, since we all like pics, here is a pic of my SP101 not long before Mom got it.

New Front Sight

The Gemini Customs Small Wonder Fiber Optic Sight was delivered. I really like it. Very bright when it has a light source. Also got my Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake holster, so I now have the complete set up, as I wanted it. Again, thanks for all the positive replies! Best wishes.
